Iowa St hired Matt Campbell when he was only 36 years old but had prior head coaching experience, as he came from the head coaching position at Toledo...

He began there at age 31 and didn't have any prior college head coaching experience before then...

He replaced Paul Rhoads who had been fired by the Cyclones, after seven seasons, where he was 32-55 and 16-45 in the Big 12...

Paul's last three seasons included two, three win seasons, and, one, two win season, along with only four conference wins during that time...

Therefore, when Matt Campbell arrived things were a huge mess in Ames, Iowa...:mad:

After going 3-9 and 2-7 in 2016, his first season at ISU, the Cyclones went 8-5 and 5-4 and won a bowl game in his second season, which led to this development...

He signed Brock Purdy from the East Valley who was a 3 star rated QB at Perry HS in Gilbert...

Purdy became the starter of the Cyclones after four games and led the Cyclones to 7 wins vs 2 losses...(he had played in 10 games)...

So, these were the Cyclones records under Purdy starting in 2018 when he was a true freshman...

2018 = 8-5 and 6-3 (bowl loss)
2019 = 7-6 and 5-4 (bowl loss)
2020 = 9-3 and 8-1 (won conference but lost to Oklahoma in title game but beat Oregon 34-17 in the Fiesta Bowl)
2021 = 7-6 and 5-4 (bowl loss)

Then, as we know, Brock was the very last player chosen in the NFL draft in 2022 by the SF 49ers...

He then became a rookie sensation with the 49ers before being hurt in the playoffs...

So, Brock really made the Cyclones a team to be reckoned with as a true FR in the Big 12 and then, as a rookie in the NFL, became a big deal immediately...

Without Purdy last year, the Cyclones fell to 4-8 and 1-8 in the Big 12...

So, are there any parallels between Matt and Dilly in your estimation..??

Are our Sun Devils, in Dilly's first year, better or worse or about the same as the Cyclones were in Matt Campbell's first year at Iowa St..??

Do we (ASU) now have a FR QB that might compare favorable to Brock Purdy as he developed at Iowa St..??

Iowa St is a far distance from the Valley compared to ASU and will that make a huge difference for Dilly moving forward in recruiting..??

Matt Campbell did not inherit a lot from his predecessor Paul Rhoads so is that situation similar to what Dilly inherited at ASU, more or less..??

Or, are all of the relevant variables different between the two situations..??

What are some of the other interesting questions that need to be asked regarding these two coaches who will start facing each other next season in the Big 12..??

Matt started his head coaching career when he was 31 and now we have Dilly, who at 32, has started his head coaching career...

I would think the Dilly has a bunch of recruiting advantages in The Valley but we'll see moving forward...

I sure hope and trust that the next Brock Purdy decides to stay in The Valley and play for our Sun Devils...

I also hope that Dilly can take our Sun Devils to a big bowl game like the Fiesta Bowl like what Matt did in his first five years at Iowa St...

As always, I'll await your feedback regarding this post...:)

Go Devils!!!
