Never beat an SEC team?

"ASU has never beat an SEC team"? Oklahoma is now an SEC team and ASU defeated them in the 1983 Fiesta Bowl 32-21. Also, how many games has ASU played against an SEC team? I go back a long way (mid 60's as a 10-year-old) following ASU football and can't recall more than 4 times we played an SEC opponent (I believe Georgia twice, LSU and Texas A&M once). It's possible I may have forgotten some others, but it's not like ASU is 0-10 or more against the SEC. Probably a good motivational tactic, but a little misleading at the same time.

STORY: One-sided season opening win leads to lackluster practice on Tuesday

“Our kids thought they won the Super Bowl on Saturday. We practiced like a 1-11 team today, but luckily, they responded the last six periods." Even though the season is just one week old, ASU has to prove that it can effectively handle its current success

Podcast: A lopsided win created a buzz, but beware of week one overaction

(29 minutes)

What a difference a year makes when it comes to ASU season openers. Last Saturday's 48-7 win over Wyoming was in sharp contrast to the too-close-to-comfort 24-21 win over Southern Utah in 2023. There is a genuine sense of excitement in Tempe, but is this a victory that has to be quickly forgotten with a higher-caliber opponent in Mississippi State coming to town?

To discuss this topic and others, I invited Brad Denny from the Speak of the Devils podcast to be my guest in this week's episode. Thank you so much for tuning in!

Sunday Walkabout

Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Devils Haboob Cowboys

That was some Devils dust storm that hit Wyoming last night in SDS...;)

Complete dominance against a Cowboy's team that was only rated a TD below the Devils entering the game...

And, the Pokes did more than their fair share of helping the Devils along the way with lots of self-destructive behavior...

But, we'll take it just like any predator would do with any pretty helpless prey they just caught and played with before the end came for the prey...

Now comes the Mississippi St Bulldogs who demolished E Kentucky yesterday 56-7 under a pass happy new coach in Jeff Lebby...

Lebby has been mentored along the coaching pathways by Art Briles at Baylor, Josh Heupel at UCF and Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss...

He is not only the Bulldogs HC but also their OC and he has a QB who won't remind anyone of the Cowboys Evan Svoboda in Baylor transfer Blake Shapen...

Shapen was 15-20 for 247 passing yards and three TDs and also rushed for another TD so had four TDs with no INTs in the game...

The Bulldogs also rushed for over 200 yards that gave them 450 total yards of offense against E Kentucky...

So, it should be a very competitive game that might come down to a made or missed FG along the way...

I believe the Devils have been established as a 2.5 pt favorite so it's basically a toss-up game for the odds-makers...

The only drawbacks last night for the Devils were the two missed FGs and the major screw-up inside the Cowboys 10 yard line, right before the half, where they came out of a TO only to be penalized for a delay of game penalty and then subsequently missed a short FG...

In the Big-12 only Houston and W Virginia lost yesterday, and from what I could tell watching various games, it looks like the Devils can be competitive against just about any team in the conference, if they play like they did against Wyoming last night...

Also glad that we don't have to face either Texas or Oklahoma who are now in the SEC and have a lot more talent than we do it appears...

So, let's enjoy the big win today and start worrying about Miss St and their new HC starting tomorrow...

Have a safe and pleasant Labor Day tomorrow...:)

G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!

Solid! Better than expected

Really solid performance for this program and much needed. We'll see how the rest of the season goes, but this game was about as good as anyone could have expected. The ONLY real issue I see is our FG kicking, but everything else looks really tight.

Another good sign in terms of coaching: they pulled our starting QB early in the 4th, and then they also wouldn't let Sims throw the ball. Both instances shows great awareness by the staff.

Love our RBs. OL played really well. Leavitt didn't make mistakes. Defense was awesome.
