Hello all, as we lead into what should be an interesting signing day, I'll keep you updated on anything I see/hear as far as trends toward/away from ASU.
As Hod outlined in his most recent recruiting snapshot, ASU is done at QB. Ryan Kelley isn't wavering, in case you'd heard otherwise- especially since Chip Lindsey likely won't be leaving for Auburn. That leaves them with the following on scholarship (eligibility in parenthesis)
Blake Barnett- 3/3
Manny Wilkins- 2/2
Brady White- 3/3
Bryce Perkins- 3/3
Dillon Sterling-Cole- 4/3
Ryan Kelley- 5/4
There's a chance Bryce Perkins does not transfer for the simple fact that due to Blake Barnett's status and Brady White's injury, he's basically the #2 quarterback. If something happens to Wilkins in the spring, you might got into 2017 with Bryce Perkins as the starter.
ASU is also done at RB, and thanks to Kalen Ballage's return, they're very deep at the position in 2017.
Kalen Ballage- 2/1
Demario Richard- 2/1
Jacom Brimhall- 2/1
Nick Ralston- 3/3
Tre Turner- 4/4
Trelon Smith- 5/4
Eno Benjamin- 5/4
I do not expect 2016 walk-on Gil-Scott Jackson to have an impact at all in 2017, but with all the turnover that's happening after the season, he might be someone you see contribute in 2018 if he can make some progress in the weight room.
At WR, Jay Norvell was chasing some monsters, but with him at Nevada and Delvaughn Alexander at Notre Dame, the Sun Devils are limited in who they're pursuing. They hope to gain a commitment from Gavin Holmes when he's on campus this weekend. They'd love for his relationship with Eno Benjamin to pay off. There's a small chance that if Holmes isn't feeling ASU, they jump in late on 6-4 Georgetown, TX WR Beau Corrales, who was once an Iowa commit, but they also might just be content to move forward with what they have.
Cam Smith- 1/1
Ryan Jenkins- 1/1 (not on scholarship)
Ellis Jefferson- 1/1
Jalen Harvey- 2/2
John Humphrey- 3/3
Ryan Newsome- 3/3
Terrell Chatman- 3/3
N'Keal Harry- 4/3
Jack Smith- 4/3
Kyle Williams- 4/3
Frank Darby - 4/4
Curtis Hodges- 5/4
I do expect Kade Warner to walk on at ASU. The Sun Devils are hoping they can convince him to stay home in the event he doesn't get an offer.
At TE they're done. I almost wonder if we'll see a transfer or two based on Chip Lindsey's offense, but as it stands, here's who they have.
Grant Martinez- 1/1
Raymond Epps- 1/1
JayJay Wilson- 3/2
Tommy Hudson- 3/3
Jared Bubak- 4/4
Jared Poplawski- 5/4
At Offensive Tackle ASU is holding out hope they can land either Austin Jackson or George Moore. If neither player pledges to ASU, I can see them extending a late offer to 3-star Frisco, Texas OL Jason Moore, who is currently leaning toward Ivy League over New Mexico, Kansas, and several smaller schools. Jason Moore is probably a tweener guard/tackle, which is something they could have gotten if they had offered recent UCLA pledge Jax Wacaser.
Projected starters
Sam Jones- 2/2
Zach Robertson- 3/3
AJ McCollum- 1/1
Steven Miller- 3/3
Quinn Bailey- 3/3
The Rest
Tyler McClure- 1/1 (not on scholarship)
Corey Smith- 1/1
Cohl Cabral- 4/3
Connor Humphreys- 2/2
Tyson Rising- 2/2
Cade Cote- 3/3
Mason Walter- 3/3
Marshal Nathe- 4/4
Alex Losoya- 3/3 (erroneously had last year count as both a redshirt and a year of eligibility- should be fixed by ASU soon)
Corey Stephens- 5/4
Longsnapper duties will be held down by sennior Mitch Fraboni, so long as he's healthy this season.
Punter duties will be handles by redshirt sophomore Michael Sleep-Dalton, who has three years of eligibility remaining.
Kicker could be walk-on John O'Brien's spot to lose. He's a redshirt junior. ASU wants to flip Alabama commit Brandon Ruiz, but if they can't, look for them to try and get Cristian Zendejas (Perry), Jeff Maguire (Pinnacle), Dylan Brown (Phoenix College) or Trevor Eldean (Brophy) to walk on.
The defensive line got an unexpected boost from the commitment of former UCF pledge DJ Davidson after he retook a couple high school classes to make sure he could classify without going the JuCo route. With Joe Seumalo out, it'll be interesting to see if they can attract any DL talent at the last minute. They just offered 2-star Shannon Forman the day after Missouri came in on him, and I keep thinking the Devils might throw a hail mary on undecided Valor Christian DT Noah Ellis, but if it hasn't happened yet...
Here's what they have as far as next year's roster:
JoJo Wicker- 3/2
Tashon Smallwood- 2/1
George Lea- 3/3
Christian Hill- 2/1 (may be used more as blocking TE)
Emanuel Dayries- 2/2
Renell Wren- 2/2
Jalen Bates- 3/3 (injured)
Look out for walk on transfer Jordan Hoyt (2/2) to battle for playing time.
Phill Bennett runs a 3-4 defense at times, so the traditional outside linebacker role could replace the current model, but I don't expect much variation from the devil/spur/sam designations. For the purposes of being expedient, we'll just lump the linebackers into one group. The Devils want Gary Johnson. So does Oregon. I believe Odua Isibor ends up at UCLA, and My-King Johnson, if he goes anywhere, will head to ASU. Jalen Harris is exploring other options outside U of A, but ASU isn't one of them. You might see ASU make a last minute offer on Daniel Callender of Yuma Catholic.
Christian Sam- 2/2
DJ Calhoun- 2/1
Doug Subtyl- 2/2
Koron Crump- 2/1
Khaylan Thomas- 3/3
Marcus Ball- 1/1
Alani Latu- 1/1
Malik Lawal- 3/3
Loren Mondy- 5/4
Kyle Soelle- 5/4
Tyler Johnson- 5/4
The cornerback position is upperclassmen heavy after last year's JuCo haul. Alex Perry is an important recruit that might get some early playing time. I don't believe Arizona State will land Jhavonte Dean over Miami, and although he's visiting, Jaylon Johnson isn't flipping from Utah. ASU is trying to flip Riverside CB Tareke Lewis, and if they can't get him, then they might offer his JuCo teammate Brandon Brooks. Another they might offer late in the game is 3-star Texas CB Samuel Barnes. I also believe they're working on a last minute pitch to Tennessee commit Terrell Bailey. Here's what the roster looks like for next season.
Maurice Chandler- 2/1
Chad Adams- 2/1
Kareem Orr- 3/2
Robbie Robinson- 4/3
Chase Lucas- 4/4
Safety- Spur/Bandit
Simply put, ASU is looking to upgrade over what they have. Isaiah Pola-Mao and KJ Jarrell are prospects that might very well commit to ASU, as well as Evan Fields. The Sun Devils would take Bubba Bolden if his parents allowed him to commit to the school he wants to be at, and/or Todd Harris if he miraculously decided to leave the southeast, but those two are definitely longshots.
James Johnson- 1/1
Armand Perry- 2/2
J'Marcus Rhodes- 2/1
Deion Guignard- 3/2
Tyler Whiley- 2/2
Dasmond Tautalatasi- 2/2
If I had to wager on what ASU's final commits will be leading into signing day, I'd say
Gavin Holmes
George Moore
My-King Johnson OR Daniel Callender
Evan Fields
KJ Jarrell
Isaiah Pola-Mao
