TEMPE, Ariz. – College Football Hall of Fame Inductee Danny White, who led Arizona State to three consecutive bowl games and led the NFL Dallas Cowboys to five consecutive playoff appearances as their starting quarterback, is returning to the Arizona State football program as a consultant and as an Ambassador in conjunction with Sun Devil Athletics and the Sun Devil Club, as announced today by Arizona State Head Football Coach Todd Graham and the Sun Devil Club.

In addition, Graham announced that former University of Wyoming Head Coach Dave Christensen, a veteran of 35 years of college football coaching, is joining the ASU coaching staff as a non-coaching consultant.

“As a lifelong Dallas Cowboy fan Danny White has always been one of my heroes,” says Graham. “He is one of the finest persons I have ever met. What he brings to our program and what he can do to make a difference in our player’s lives is something I am looking forward to. He will be tremendous for us. One of my first memories of becoming a Sun Devil was meeting the great Wilford ‘Whizzer’ White, Danny’s father.

“Dave Christensen brings a lifetime of knowledge and experience in college football to our program. He’s been a part of championships and that will be invaluable to our program.”

White was the Sun Devil starting quarterback from 1971-73. Playing for legendary Head Coach Frank Kush, White was part of three Western Athletic Conference Championship teams, compiling a combined record of 32-4. In addition, White led ASU to victories in the first three Fiesta Bowls. He was selected first-team all-America in 1973 by Time Magazine, Football Writers and NEA and second-team all-America the same year by United Press International and Associated Press.

While at ASU, White set seven NCAA passing records, and was named the second highest rated college quarterback of all time by Sports Illustrated. White was a member of the inaugural class inducted into the ASU Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.

Following two seasons with the World Football League Memphis Southmen, White joined the Cowboys. He took over as Dallas’ starting quarterback in 1980, establishing a then-franchise record for touchdown passes in a season (29). White guided the Cowboys to three consecutive appearances in the NFC Championship Game in his first three years as the starter.

Following his playing career, White was named the first Head Coach and General Manager of the Arena Football League Arizona Rattlers. Under his leadership, the Rattlers earned five berths in the league’s championship game (ArenaBowl), winning the championship in 1994 and 1997. He finished his coaching career with a 141-65 won-loss record, and was inducted into the Arena Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Currently, White serves as an analyst for Cowboys games on Compass Media Networks.

Christensen spent 19 years as an assistant under Head Coach Gary Pinkel, first at Toledo (1992-2000) then at Missouri (2001-08). He served as Offensive Coordinator under Pinkel from 1997-2008. While at Missouri, Christensen devised a no-huddle attack that helped the Tigers advance to the Big 12 Championship Game in 2007 and 2008. For his efforts, Christensen was named 2007 National Offensive Coordinator of the Year by Rivals.com.

While at Wyoming, Christensen guided the Cowboys to two appearances in the New Mexico Bowl during his five years in Laramie (2009-2013). His last coaching assignment was as Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator at Texas A and M (2015).

The hires are pending ASU Human Resources Paperwork approval.
