ASU tied Western Michigan 2-2 tonight, but did win in double OT. The NCAA only records the results after the first OT, as the conferences do not have one set of rules as to how they will determine the winner. This is much like we saw at Ohio State. This was an absolutely huge result. Western Michigan #9 in the nation and #4 in the Pairwise. For those that don't know hockey, the Pairwise is a measuring tool for how good each school is (like the BPI for hoops). It has been right on target for the NCAA tourney sections for numerous years. So to make this easy, Western Michigan is a damn good club. We actually led 2-1 late in the third, but gave up the tying goal with 54 seconds left. Wade Murphy, a transfer from North Dakota, buried the OT winner in the 3-on-3.
This was our last D-1 contest of the season. We have Simon Fraser for 2 games at home next weekend and then 2 against USA U-18s in three weeks to close the season. All 4 of these are exhibition by NCAA standards.
Hell of a season. Unbelievable strides made by Coach Powers and these kids. Get them a damn building, because this thing could be good really fast. This was a quote from the WMU head coach last night after a 4-2 loss to WMU "They have a hardworking, determined team ... they are one of the best structured teams we've played all season." That is a huge compliment.
Head out to Oceanside next week. You won't be disappointed.
