ASU had teams out to their practice fields yesterday for 7-on-7 and Big-man challenge. Here is some takes and info I came away with from the time I spent there...
Chandler HS is loaded with offensive weapons:
From a receiver stand point, N'Keal Harry looked like a man among boys. He has height over defenders as well as strength. He is built for the college level. He ran solid routes and was able to easily separate and find wide open space. He also has speed and showed nice agility after the catch. His strength undoubtedly will benefit him once they pad up and play full contact, but his strength also allows him to catch difficult passes - with his arms extended out fully he can grasp the ball tightly to pull in the catch. He was making plays all night.
Chase Lucas was equally impressive with his playmaking ability. He was also able to get open at will, whether it was with quick cuts or straightaway speed. His RB ability was apparent through his lightning quick moves after the catch. He can really plant that foot and change directions. He made a defender miss on just about every catch he made in the open field. Like Harry, he is great at coming out of his routes and locating the ball in the air - he made a ton of tough, dramatic catches. I did not seem him play on the defensive side of the ball. But he killed it all night on O.
Kolby Taylor (2017) was another great option for Chandler. He has good footwork and speed, and a sturdy frame. The Taylors all look alike. He has consistent and reliable hands. He would be a No.1 option at most other schools.
Chandler had plenty of other guys in there contributing. It helps to have so many options, because the defense can't focus on everybody.
Chandler and Saguaro got to face off in the second game of the night. Saguaro star Byron Murphy played on both sides of the ball throughout the night. He also had no problem getting open and is very athletic and talented. He caught a great deep ball in the end zone that he had to jump for and he seemed to be floating in the air as he turned his body to make the grab. With him and N'Keal Harry sharing 4 of their top 5 schools which includes ASU, one college program might hit the jackpot and land them both. He tweaked his ankle late in the night but seemed to be alright.
BIG MAN CHALLENGE
Each team participated in five different relay events that involved strength and agility. Not only did they race head to head against other teams, but their times were used to seed them in the tug-of-war tournament. The final showdown was between Saguaro and Centennial. Saguaro's lineup was a beast. Kayden Lyles led the front of that team as they took first place.
