AZ schools admission to the Pac 10

I don't think I've read a definitive answer to why the Pac 8 let the AZ schools in. Today, I read an au homer's version of it.

"UofA President John Schaefer’s many negotiations with USC President John Hubbard and UCLA Chancellor Charles Young led to Arizona’s acceptance into the Pac, and ASu was able to follow them in."

Anyone know the "real story?"
