Hansen reminds us that when Bobby was hired by ASU he talked about competing for PAC championships and wanting to make it to the Final Four some day...
Hansen said he bought into it because Hurley was an iconic former basketball star at Duke who did play for championships and made it to Final Fours...
After all, despite only coaching two seasons at Buffalo before coming to ASU, this was a college BB legend who was now at a P-5 school, so high expectations were not ought of the question...
Bobby was going to take the Sun Devil "buried-in-oblivion" BB program and take it to another big time level...
But, in Bobby's 8th year at ASU, he is 65-67 in the PAC, only 3-11 against the Cats and only 12-29 against the Cats, Bruins and Ducks...
The Devils have also only won one NCAA tournament game under Bobby...
However, if you believe Hansen, he still feels as though Bobby is poised to do big things for the Sun Devils...
Why..??
Because the PAC is stacked with 'stuck-in-mediocrity BB programs, with uninspiring, virtually unknown, head coaches"...
That's why, as Hansen points out that over the past 7.5 seasons the PAC has become a "league of empty seats"....
Hansen also wonders if any previous college all-star basketball players have taken programs to another level as college coaches and the answer is no...
He outlines what previous all-stars did while coaching at the college level that include former Duke guard Johnny Dawkins, Kansas great Danny Manning, Georgetown's Patrick Ewing, Memphis Penny Hardaway, the Cats Damon Stoudamire and Indiana's Steve Alford...
None of them did anything to distinguish themselves as coaches although Steve Alford did get to a Sweet 16 once...
So, Hansen finishes by asking the question as to whether Bobby can finally take the Devils to a new, elevated level, within a pretty mediocre conference...
