I noticed in Joe Healey's recent post about Cal Poly that the Mustangs go for it on 4th down a lot and don't kick all that much it would appear and wonder if their coach Tim Walsh is a disciple of HS legendary coach Kevin Kelley, who was recently featured on HBO's Real Sports hosted by Bryant Gumble...

Kevin Kelley has led his Pulaski Academy teams in Arkansas to multiple state championships by almost never kicking or punting the football...the team uses on-side kicks to kick off and usually goes for it on 4th downs, because statistics tell Kelley that the odds are in his favor going for it on 4th down in most situations vs punting the ball away...

Not only did he catch the attention of Real Sports but he has also caught the attention of the NFL as the Atlanta Falcons and another un-named team has contacted him about his philosophy...have to wonder if that other team is the Eagles as that sounds right up Chip Kelly's alley or, perhaps, the Patriots who are always looking for that edge...

It's a very interesting philosophy and asked why most coaches don't employ it, he says that they are just irrationally fearful because stats tell you to go for it...he's now using Rugby free flowing passes in his offense and it will be interesting to see how that turns out...my guess is that type of "football" would pique the interest of fans and get them to turn out in great numbers if it worked...

Thoughts..??
