Narbonne (Calif.) High School wide receiver Devaughn Cooper has been committed to Arizona since July of last year but with two January visits to Syracuse and just recently ASU, doesn’t appear to be currently solid with his pledge with Wednesday’ signing day looming large.
We talked to a source close to the 6-0 175 wide receiver about Cooper’s visit to Tempe and he said the wide receiver enjoyed the coaching staff and the overall campus environment. He was hosted by Jalen Harvey who told him that: “this is a good environment and a good offense, and that the coaches are pretty cool guys and will help you become a better player.”
The ASU coaches conveyed to Cooper that his “speed and playmaking” are the traits that stand out the most in terms of his skills. They didn't discuss him potentially playing one specific wide receiver position and in turn Cooper doesn’t have preference playing one role over another.
The source told me that Cooper is taking Monday to formulate his final decision and he hopes to make up his mind Tuesday. It remains unclear whether the wide receiver will make any kind of public announcement that day but will probably inform all the coaches prior to signing day. The source feels that all the schools the wide receiver is considering (ASU, Arizona and Syracuse) all equal right now and that Cooper doesn’t favor one school over the other.
His relationship with the coaches and players at each school will probably be the determining factor in his resolution.
My personal opinion is that ASU has a good chance here of flipping Cooper. They have been recruiting him hard for months now and were wise to secure the last visit before signing day. For a commit that is unsure with his decision to begin with that could pay off.
Cooper had an impressive senior season hauling in 67 catches, 1,280 yards and 19 touchdowns. His Narbonne's team finished 2015 with an 14-2 mark.
