INJURIES

RB Eno Benjamin and CB Chase Lucas both missed out on the majority of Tuesday’s practice again. Lucas was in the bubble at the beginning of practice and watched the scrimmage from the sidelines. RB Brandon LaMarche was another non-participant for most of practice.

CB Joey Bryant did positional drills but no contact.

OL Jonathan Sanchez, who appeared to suffer an injury on Friday night, did not participate. Early in practice on Tuesday, OL Cade Cote walked off the field and was later seen in a walking boot.

DLs D.J. Davidson and Doug Subtyl both went into the bubble for conditioning and missed out on practice. NT George Lea also didn’t participate in full team or positional drills.

Other non-participating players who were seen going into the bubble at the beginning of Friday’s practice: S Demonte King, LB Koron Crump (who was again shadowing other OLBs during walk-throughs).

LIKENS AT PRACTICE DESPITE FATHER’S PASSING

Offensive coordinator Rob Likens was at practice on Tuesday after his father passed away earlier in the week. Likens’ father has been ill for some time, going back to national signing day, when Likens was not available.

Moving forward, Likens will not be at Friday night’s spring game, either, as he addresses the loss in his family. His availability for Thursday is unclear at this point.

ZACH ROBERTSON MOVES AROUND ON O-LINE

After getting a late start on spring practice, redshirt junior offensive lineman Zach Robertson has played primarily as a second-teamer, backing up Quinn Bailey at his natural right tackle position.

But with a thin offensive line group, Robertson was tried at a couple other positions on Tuesday. The 6-foot-6, 336-pounder split first-team scrimmage reps at left tackle with Tyson Rising on Tuesday and also ran a couple positional reps at left guard.

His results were a mixed bag. During positional drills, he received praise from offensive line coach Dave Christensen. Later, he started the practice’s first scrimmage period on the first team (more on the scrimmage below). However, he only stayed on the field for four snaps before being subbed for Rising.

During 1-on-1 pass protection drills, Robertson stuck with the second-teamers. On his first rep, he did well to contain DE Darius Slade to the outside. On his second turn, he was placed at left guard and got burned by Jordan Hoyt’s quickness off the line. Christensen made Robertson redo the rep against Hoyt and he contained the defensive lineman better the second time. His last rep in the drill was back at left tackle, where he again held off Slade (video below).

In the second scrimmage period, Robertson saw reps with both the first and second team units. A lot of handoffs went to his left half of the line, but that side was also breached by Darius Slade and Malik Lawal for a sack of Manny Wilkins on one play.

Robertson missed the first two weeks (six practices) of the spring while addressing undisclosed family issues.

11-ON-11 SCRIMMAGE RECAP

1st team (QB: Manny Wilkins)
-Trelon Smith takes a handoff for a short gain
-Wilkins is “sacked” (touched-downed) by Jay Jay Wilson
-Jalen Bates bats down Wilkins’ pass at the line of scrimmage
-On a broken play, Wilkins is again “sacked” after there appeared to be miscommunication between him and his receivers on an intended screen play

2nd team (QB: Dillon Sterling-Cole)
-Short handoff to Mark Cosgrove
-Another short handoff to Cosgrove. It looked like the offense had to audible to the handoff and Likens was heard joking after the play that “One day we’ll get to run the bootleg when they (the defense) don’t bring field pressure.”
-Short handoff to Cosgrove
-An overthrown pass to Jeremy Smith on a slant route falls incomplete
-On a bootleg right, DSC hits Mark Walton on a slant for a first down
-Cosgrove is stopped for no gain by Darien Cornay, who blitzed off the edge from his cornerback spot
-Bubble screen to Daniel Sanders-Effiong for a short gain

1st team (QB: Wilkins)
-Short handoff to Smith
-Short throw to Kyle Williams
-On a simulated 3rd and 1: Wilkins connects with Ryan Jenkins coming out of the slot for a first down
-Darius Slade and Malik Lawal combine for a sack of Wilkins
-A pass over the middle is knocked away by Lawal, with Jalen Harvey crashing down hard on the intended receiver
-On a simulated 3rd and long: Wilkins airs a deep ball for Jenkins down the right sideline but Jenkins, again after lining up in the slot, can’t make a diving catch after separating from Langston Frederick
-Short pass to Ryan Newsome on an out route

2nd team (QB: Sterling-Cole)
-Quick pass to Sanders-Effiong on the edge
-Quick pass to Jeremy Smith
-Short throw to Trevor Russell underneath

2nd team (QB: Blake Barnett)
-Short handoff to Cosgrove
-Curtis Hodges turns a short catch into a nice gain
-A throw too far in front of Russell bounces off his hands and falls incomplete over the middle
-Barnett keeps the ball on a read option for a short gain
-On a simulated 3rd and 7: Under pressure, Barnett lofts a deep ball for Frank Darby who separated from Cornay and makes a 37-yard touchdown catch
