I'm home getting used to the heat once again to prepare myself for the upcoming heat grind in SDS and the last thing I wanted to have to read about was the sudden departure of Bo Graham, which follows the untimely departure of Davon Durant and the BB gun incident that led to George Lea being red-shirted this season...
Obviously, something untoward happened, which is a nice adjective to use when referencing "personal reasons" for the sudden departure...you can tell Coach Graham is not a happy camper due to whatever happened and everyone inside the athletic dept and football program is very tight lipped about "it" as they should be...
The details will eventually surface and I'm pretty sure that this matter won't impact the upcoming season in any way but it does bring up the proverbial "gut check time" for the team...
I watched a replay of the Sun Bowl earlier today on the PAC Network that we ultimately won vs Duke and where I literally froze my butt off while watching it in El Paso that day...
The bowl game epitomized the season in many regards...the Devils jumped out to a nice lead and looked to be in control until we allowed Duke to run back a punt (68 yds) just before halftime to pull them within 3 pts...we then came out after the half and scored right away but Duke just kept grinding and stayed with us, using some long pass plays and a bruising ground attack...
We had 4th and a foot for a first down in their territory in the 4th quarter but couldn't convert, as we had a guard pulling and our back got stuffed, which had the broadcast booth wondering what the hell we were trying to do in that situation...
Duke ended up taking the lead after a 4th down fake punt caught us off guard, which led to a Blue Devil TD but we answered right back with a Ballage kick-off return that led to a Sun Devil TD...Duke then drove the length of the field and was about to score the winning TD, inside our 20 yd line, when K Brown saved our bacon with a great INT...
TAMU is probably much more explosive than either Oregon St or Arizona was in those games last season, so we cannot afford to give up big plays like we did against them...the game will probably hinge, as most do, on turnovers and who rushes better during the game...you throw for show but run for the dough...I'll bet that TAMU was out-rushed in all of their losses last season but I'm too lazy to look it up...
I'm sure that Bo will land on his feet and that we will win a bunch of games this year despite the distractions...gut check time for the Sun Devil Brotherhood...Go Devils!!!
