Nope, as we are not talking about our Sun Devils but rather the true "sleeping giant" in the PAC which is USC...
They just hired Lincoln Riley who looked at moving to the SEC, where his Sooners just might be another team there, taking a back seat to Alabama and some other highly ranked SEC programs, so LIncoln decided that the grass definitely looked greener on the West Coast, where the "wine and cheese" conference of olympic sports champions did not have enough teams with winning records to fill all of their bowl game allotments this year...
As a result of this conference ineptitude, coach Riley took about two seconds to think things over and decided that "wine and cheese" is much preferable than eating crap in the SEC...
He has all the talent in the world sitting at his doorstep in So Cal and the reputation to turn things around at USC very, very quickly...
Under his guidance, the Trojans should not have any problem at least doubling their win total of this year that stands at four...
They already have a couple of NFL type QBs on their roster and more than enough talent at other positions to wreck havoc on a slate of weak PAC opponents starting next season...
The Ducks appear to be the only other PAC team that can win consistently in the conference and compete for national recognition annually, given their great recruiting under Mario Christobal...
This news is great for the conference as it should enhance our ability to attract more sponsorship in the coming months through media rights deals but certainly won't help a program like ASU, who is the ersatz holder of the "sleeping giant" tag line...
Pete Carroll had been gone for over a decade while the Trojans screwed around with their football program but none of the rest of the conference, for the most part, including our Sun Devils, took advantage of the situation to benefit their programs in any significant way...
Now the ersatz Sun Devil "sleeping giant" is facing not only an NCAA investigation into alleged recruiting violations but will be finding it much more difficult to rise in the South Division with a Trojan program that won't be a joke any more...
Of course, if Kyle Whittingham retires from his coaching position at Utah, that might be a plus for us depending on who the Utes tap to replace him...
And, we have the lowly Buffs and Cats to beat up on if Herm can somehow salvage this recruiting cycle and doesn't lose a bunch of players to the transfer portal...
In other college football news, Florida is hiring former Sun Devil OC Billy Napier, who did a wonderful job of coaching at Louisiana-Lafayette, where he will remain with the Rajin Cajuns through this next weekend, when they play App St for the Sun Belt Conference championship...
Also, TCU has hired Sonny Dykes to be their new head coach where he will move only a few miles from SMU in Dallas to TCU in Ft Worth...
So, Sun Devil fans, is our glass half-full these days or half-empty, moving forward under Herm and the dark cloud provided by the NCAA investigation of our football program..??
Just as importantly, is the PAC's glass now more than half-full, with the addition of Lincoln Riley at USC or just about the same as ever, pretty half-empty based on our conference record of the past several years, where we haven't accomplished much compared to many other conferences..??
Go Devils!!!
