ATLANTA (Nov. 25, 2019) - Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that Arizona State head football coach Herm Edwards has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week for the third time this season. Edwards also received the honor earlier in the year after defeating a ranked Michigan State team on Sept. 14 and No. 15 Cal on Sept. 28.

This is the first time in the award’s history that a coach has received the honor three times in a single season.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

Edwards once again led his Arizona State team to a win against a ranked opponent, this time at home. No. 6 Oregon had one loss coming into the matchup with its eyes set on the College Football Playoff, but freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels completed 22 of 32 passes for 408 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Sun Devils over the Ducks 31-28 in Tempe.

Arizona State is now 5-4 against ranked teams under Edwards, with three of those wins coming this season. With the win, the Sun Devils now qualify for a bowl game for the eighth time in the past nine seasons, including in every season under Edwards.

“The way that coach Edwards inspires his players to play their hearts out against top competition is remarkable,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “To be named Coach of the Week three times in a season puts him in a class all to himself. He is one of college football’s most impactful leaders, and coach Dodd would be proud to see him recognized so frequently with an award that bears his name.”

Edwards made his return to coaching last season after ten years away from the job, where he spent most of his time as an analyst on ESPN. Previously, he was an NFL head coach for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs.

In his first stint as a college football head coach, Edwards has immediately made his impact felt not only on the football field, but in the classroom and the community as well. Arizona State’s Academic Progress Rate (APR), which measures a program’s success in the classroom year-over-year, currently sits at 980, which ranks as one of the highest scores in the country.

Edwards remains active in numerous charitable and philanthropic endeavors as well, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF, along with his wife, Lia, who lives with Type I diabetes. He also created the Herman L. Edwards Family Youth Foundation in 1985 with the goal of making a direct impact on the lives of children on the Monterey Peninsula. Edwards has been recognized by multiple organizations for his work in the community, including the prestigious Walter Camp Foundation Man of the Year Award in 2012.

“We’re honored to be able to award one of the nation’s best once again,” said Gary Stokan, CEO and president of Peach Bowl, Inc. “We have never given the award to someone three times in a season, but Edwards has definitely earned this distinction. The impact that he has had in his time in Tempe is truly exceptional.”

The Dodd Trophy presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2019 season. The winner of the 2019 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during bowl week for this year’s College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
