The last several weeks marked a flurry of activity for the Sun Devils’ recruiting efforts, adding 13 of their 16 current 2024 class commits. With the action slowing down these days, we take a moment to examine the current ASU 2024 class recruiting picture position by position as well as detailing what the To-Do list looks like for each group.

Quarterback

Scholarship players (listed in descending class order):

Junior Trenton Bourguet

Sophomore Drew Pyne

Sophomore Jacob Conover

Freshman Jaden Rashada

Commits:

N/A

Target number:

4

Analysis:

The quarterback room for ASU is set for next year, and it’s unlikely that Arizona State will add a signal caller from the 2024 class. That’s not to say that they have zero interest in local Chandler Basha signal caller Demond Williams who decommitted from Ole Miss a few days ago, but with Rashada expected to be the quarterback of the future and 2025 four-star QB Michael Tollefson already committed to the Sun Devils (no 2024 QB taken was definitely a big factor in his pledge), I could see Williams seeking out other opportunities. All in all, if he’s not joining the ranks here, I don’t see ASU trying to add another quarterback in this class.

Running Back

Scholarship players (listed in descending class order):

Junior Cameron Skattebo

Junior George Hart III

Junior DeCarlos Brooks

Sophomore Tevin White

Freshman Kyson Brown

Commits:

N/A

Target number:

5-6

Analysis:

Five scholarship running backs are a healthy number for a roster, especially with no seniors. Yet, it’s not out of the question that ASU would add another one in the 2024 class, whether it would be a high school/junior college prospect or transfer portal addition. I don’t think we’ll see any post-season defections from this position group, but if this group overall underperforms in 2023, then it’s likely we could see Arizona State add perhaps even two running backs with at least one of them from the portal.

Offensive Line

Scholarship players (listed in descending class order):

Senior Aaron Frost

Senior Joey Ramos

Senior Emmit Bohle

Junior Ben Coleman

Junior Leif Fautanu

Junior Isaia Glass

Junior Kyle Scott

Junior Sione Finau

Junior Cade Briggs

Sophomore Ben Bray

Sophomore Maxwell Iheanachor

Sophomore Bram Walden

Freshman Sirri Kandiyeli

Freshman Sean Na’a

Commits:

Champ Westbrooks

Target number:

15

Analysis:

ASU currently has 14 players on the 2023 roster, and three of them will exhaust their eligibility following this season. With one pledge to date, ideally, Arizona State would want to add at least two more players and wouldn’t be surprised if the other two would come from the portal since two of their seniors (Frost and Ramos) are virtually shoo-ins to start, and ideally, the Sun Devils would want “plug in and play” additions that can genuinely contend for a starting position.

Attrition could bring the number of additions from all ranks to a handful. Either way, when constructing the roster for 2024 and due to a good volume of talent expected to return next year, I could see ASU affording themselves to be more selective in the portal than they were building up this unit ahead of this season and/or willing to take on underrecruited high school players who caught their eye this year.

Wide Receiver

Scholarship players (listed in descending class order):

Senior Gio Sanders

Senior Melquan Stovall

Junior Jake Smith

Junior Xavier Guillory

Junior Elijhah Badger

Junior Andre Johnson

Sophomore Troy Omeire

Sophomore Jordyn Tyson

Sophomore Javen Jacobs

Freshman Kaleb Black

Freshman Korbin Hendrix

Commits:

Zechariah Sample

Cullen Charles

Elijah Baesa (not expected to be part of the 2024 class)

Target number:

10

Analysis:

With two seniors exhausting their eligibility after this season and the anticipation that both Badger and Guillory could declare for the NFL draft, ASU will have to add at least one more wide receiver and could go for a couple of them. Since Arizona State is content taking just two high school players (again, Baesa, due to circumstances beyond ASU’s control, won’t be part of this class), and in theory, Plas Johnson could end up as a wide receiver in Tempe rather than a defensive back, the Sun Devils will exclusively look at the portal knowing they need to fill what could be a significant void assuming 2023 is the last season Badger and Guillory will don the maroon and gold.

Tight End

Scholarship players (listed in descending class order):

Senior Messiah Swinson
Junior Jaylin Conyers
Junior Bryce Pierre
Sophomore Ryan Morgan

Commits:

Jayden Fortier

Target number:

5

Analysis:

Plain and simple, ASU needs to hit some home runs here in the 2024 class. Swinson is a senior, and Conyers is expected to declare for the NFL draft. Looking ahead to next year, I could see Pierre being a dynamic receiving tight end, but the Sun Devils will still need some experience in that room. Morgan is still inexperienced and more of a line of scrimmage player, and since Fortier will be a true freshman, I don’t think the staff will be counting on him much.

This is another position where Arizona State must be selective. Tayvion Galloway is currently the only high school prospect being pursued in earnest, but that could change in the future. I would expect ASU to add two transfer portal tight ends, where physical maturity to be an effective line of scrimmage player will be at a premium. On paper, this year’s offense should highlight Conyers’ abilities quite a bit, so scheme and a shallow depth chart can and should be attractive for veteran additions.
