TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State senior tight end Kody Kohl has been named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, announced by the award committee on Wednesday.
The John Mackey Award, named after the NFL Hall of Fame tight end, is annually granted to America's most outstanding player at the position since 2000. Mackey was considered to be the best to ever play the tight end position while also becoming the first President of the NFLPA.
Kohl becomes the first Sun Devil to be selected to the preseason list since Chris Coyle prior to the 2013 season, and is just one of four representatives named from the Pac-12.
His junior season in 2015 featured a spike in receptions year-to-year, as Kohl doubled his production from 16 catches to 32. Kohl totaled 368 yards – over 200 yards more from his sophomore season – for an average of 11.5 yards-per-catch along with four touchdowns. In October of 2015, Kohl was one of just three Pac-12 players named to the John Mackey Midseason Watch List after tallying 19 receptions for 211 yards and three touchdowns in the first six games of the season.
Kohl has started every game on offense in the previous two seasons and his 26 consecutive starts are second on this year's roster behind only linebacker Salamo Fiso's 32. Kohl is known for his big play ability with over 16 percent of his career catches going for a touchdown while over 50 percent of those catches have resulted in a first down.
The Sun Devil football program has never had a John Mackey Award winner though Todd Heap was a finalist for the inaugural award in 2000.
The John Mackey Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.
