TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State redshirt sophomore punter Michael Turk was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week, the Augusta Sports Council announced on Wednesday.

Turk, who was named the Pac-12's Special Teams Player of the Week on Tuesday, was honored for setting the NCAA, Pac-12 and ASU record for highest average yards per punt in a game with a minimum of five attempts (63.0 yards per punt) in ASU's season-opening 30-7 win over Kent State. Turk punted five times for 315 yards with boots of 64, 62, 65, 49 and 75 yards in his Sun Devil debut. Turk broke the NCAA record previously held by Braden Mann of Texas A&M (60.8 yards per punt average vs. Alabama on Sept. 22, 2018).

Turk, whose 75-yard punt in the fourth quarter tied for the seventh-longest punt in school history, crushed ASU's school records for punting average, breaking the previous school record for average on five punts of 55.0 by Danny White in 1972. Turk's 63.0 yards per punt would have set records for every minimum number of punts in a game with the closest being Tony Lorick's 59.3 yards per punt on three punts in 1962.

Turk's current 63.0 yards per punt average is nine yards further than any player in the FBS over the first two weeks of action (Kentucky's Max Duffy averaged 54.0 yards per punt on six punts). Turk, who was named to the Ray Guy Award's Preseason Watch List in July, also pinned three punts inside the 20 against Kent State, tied for the sixth-highest total nationally.

The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia, native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.

Season tickets, three-game mini plans and single-game tickets for ASU's next four home games – vs. Sacramento State (Sept. 6), vs. Colorado (Sept. 21), vs. Washington State (Oct. 12) and vs. USC (Nov. 9) – are currently on sale and can be purchased at www.sundeviltickets.com or by contacting the Sun Devil Athletics Ticket Office at 480-727-0000.

The Sun Devils (1-0) return to action on Friday when they host Sacramento State (1-0) at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Network/Sun Devil Radio Network).
