TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Football redshirt senior quarterback Mike Bercovici has been named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced Thursday.

The Campbell Trophy is college football's premier scholar-athlete award and recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation.

Bercovici is one of four candidates from the Pac-12, and his inclusion marks the second consecutive season the Sun Devils’ starting quarterback has earned recognition as a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy. Taylor Kelly went on to become a finalist for the 2014 Campbell Trophy and a member of the 2014 National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Class.

A two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree, Bercovici needed just three years to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management in May 2014 and is currently enrolled in a Master’s of Sports Law and Business. He has been a Scholar Baller®, an honor given to a student-athlete who achieves a GPA of 3.0 or above, in 10 semesters, and is on track to earn his graduate degree in May 2016.

A team captain and a member of the team’s Leadership Council, Bercovici, who is from Calabasas, Calif., is a five-year member of ASU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has been an advocate for the Championship Life Program created by ASU. He helped put together a presentation with Jean Boyd and Drew Rosenhaus that is designed to help young student-athletes make the most of their time in school and ensure they set themselves up for a positive future, and has also been instrumental in influencing his teammates and other student-athletes to become more involved in the community. He has served as an ambassador for the football program and Arizona State University on numerous occasions, including as a pace setter for kids’ portion of Pat’s Run, as a representative at annual Pac-12 Football Media Day, as a speaker on behalf of the Sun Devil Club at multiple events, and as a panelist at the annual Tempe Chamber of Commerce Football Kickoff Luncheon.

Bercovici ranks among the top-30 nationally in completions per game, passing touchdowns, passing yards, points responsible for, and points responsible for per game in 2015. He is one of four quarterbacks in the nation this season with more than 110 passing attempts and one or fewer interceptions, and his 13 touchdown passes through his first five career starts are a school record.

He has dedicated more than 50 hours of community service at various kid’s camps and youth clinics throughout his career, and has dedicated another 50-plus hours in a number of visits during his five years at ASU, including multiple trips to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the Carson Children’s Hospital in Mesa. He has also been heavily involved in the Scholar Baller leadership and outreach program, which helps young people develop championship character and a strong sense of self-esteem, and provides tips to become a great leader.

Bercovici was also recently tabbed as a candidate for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes student-athletes who excel both on and off the field, and have notable achievement in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

The NFF will announce 15 finalists on Oct. 29, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 58th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 8, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. At the event, one member of the class will be declared in dramatic fashion the winner of the 26th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
