Monday’s practice, the tenth of fall camp, was inside the bubble after thunderstorms took place all through the night in Tempe. The team was in shells – helmets and shoulder pads. We were once again only able to view team stretches through the long individual period before leaving the bubble. The offense mostly worked on blocking, handoffs, and basic readiness drills such as watching the ball on the line of scrimmage. All skill players went through receiving drills.

Personnel Notes:

OL Ben Scott was not at practice today.

TE Jake Ray, WR Chad Johnson Jr., WR Elijhah Badger, and RB Jackson He all participated in workouts on “Muscle Beach,” the area where the weights are located inside the bubble.

TE Curtis Hodges returned to full participation after limited involvement on Friday afternoon.

OL Armon Bethea returned to practice after not attending Friday’s session.

Once again, we did not see any team periods, so these lineups are not definitive.

TE John Stivers split reps with Hodges.

During individual drills, the offensive line went to their corner of the west endzone to work on a variety of looks and schemes. They began with five-man zone run blocking to the left and right before offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh chose to share some wisdom in his “abrasive” way, of which we could hear all the way across the bubble. Next, the group matched up in pairings and moved laterally, trying to move their opponent to an edge and get around them. Cavanaugh was particularly fired up about the pairing of redshirt sophomore Eddie Medina and redshirt junior Kyle Breed. Freshman tackle Isaia Glass moved over from the second-string left tackle spot to the right tackle position with the absence of Ben Scott.

The quarterbacks and running backs began the individual period working on handoffs and running downhill. These were crisp and clean connections between the pairings. The quarterbacks then went to the red zone, working on moving their feed under pressure and connecting with a receiver with a cross body throw. Daniels looked uber-efficient in dodging the pressure. The running backs took to their own area of the field and focused on quick cut moves and reactions to defenders – who in this case were played by yellow trash cans at the leverage of running backs coach Shaun Aguano. Rachaad White looked sleek, smooth, fast, and powerful in his cuts and movement.

The tight ends, under the tutelage of interim coach Juston Wood, worked on picking up blocks as heavy medicine balls were thrown at them, requiring them to bat the ball down. Next, they focused on proper blocking form and technique, emphasizing pad level and hand placement from a three-point stance. They next simulated a power scheme, pulling the tight ends to pick up a block on the edge. The assistant holding the pad was nearly knocked down by the power of the pulling tight ends, particularly junior Case Hatch and graduate John Stivers. They finished their separate individual work by coming out of a three-point stance, forcing a way around their man, and catching a pass on an in route.

The tight ends and running backs linked up just before we left the bubble, performing a combined drill with two quarterbacks as well. The running back moved on a pre-snap motion, with the tight end on the line of scrimmage. When the ball was snapped, both would run a route before receiving the ball.

The wide receivers began their individual work directly next to us, as interim wide receivers coach Bobby Wade put the receivers on the line of scrimmage and told them to watch the ball. Wade tried everything to get the players to jump offsides, but the group had no miscues today. Next, they did their parallel drill, where two receivers run directly at each other, and the player behind makes the catch as his opponent crosses right in front.

They then joined forces with the quarterbacks for routes on air. Daniels connected with Porter, Pearsall, and Thompson with ease and swagger. Bourguet, Collins, and redshirt freshman Daylin McLemore all hit their targets amongst the healthy second and third team wideouts. The receivers ran go routes and deep sideline posts. Andre Johnson was the only receiver to drop a pass in the period.

On our way out of the bubble, we were able to view one play of 11-on-11. The result was a five-to-eight-yard gain on a Curtis Hodges reception across the middle.

Defense

With heavy rainfall in the Valley, this weekend causing a slick practice field at the Bill Kajikawa practice facility, Herm Edwards and the Sun Devils retreated into the comfort of the bubble for practice on Monday – ASU’s 10th of the fall camp. The vocal super senior cornerback Chase Lucas once again rallied the Sun Devils after its opening period of stretches, reiterating his message from throughout fall camp: “Take somebody’s spot today,” Lucas implored the Sun Devils as practice got underway.

During the couple of snaps the media was able to view prior to exiting the Verde Dickey Dome, Arizona State’s defense opened 11-on-11 work in its 4-2-5 formation for the opening snap, before shifting redshirt freshman linebacker Will Shaffer in to replace Kyle Soelle, who was not spotted at practice today.

Safety DeAndre Pierce was in attendance for practice but was a non-participant during contact drills. Pierce stretched with the Sun Devils but never had his helmet with him for any work on Monday. Redshirt senior Timarcus Davis was in the bubble Monday, but the Sun Devil cornerback – who had starred through camp thus far – was sporting a boot.

Other Sun Devil defensive players who didn’t practice on Monday: LB Kyle Soelle, DL Omarr Norman-Lott (was on muscle beach), DL Jermayne Lole, DB Tommi Hill.

ASU’s linebackers and defensive backs began positional drills using the rolling tackling wheels before Chris Claiborne’s unit worked together to work on wrapping up and finishing through their tackles. When the linebackers shifted their attention to shedding blocks, utilizing the heavy sleds to displace and move toward the next level, Darien Butler and Merlin Robertson each showed the explosiveness that has made them stalwarts in the Sun Devil defense these past four years. Will Shaffer also continued to work with great intensity, adding to the solid fall camp he’s had thus far.

While the linebackers and cornerbacks each worked on tackling, defensive line coach Robert Rodriguez worked with his group on their ball skills. Rodriguez had the Sun Devil defensive line begin its practice routine by practicing dropping into coverage and making an interception. Graduate defensive end Travez Moore and freshman defensive lineman Gharin Stansbury stood out with soft hands and solid hand-eye coordination.

Before Arizona State moved into its 11-on-11 period, the defense simulated coverages and worked on linebacker blitzes. During the drill – which did not include a full group of defensive linemen – the second team Sun Devil defensive backs lined up as follows: Keon Markham, Ed Woods, D.J. Taylor, Kejuan Markham, and R.J. Regan.

Arizona State is scheduled to practice again Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
