Got a good night's sleep after not getting to bed until almost 1am following the ASU game Sat night...love those 8pm kickoffs to accommodate the PAC Network that hardly anyone ever watches... I used to drive home after each game but decided it would be far wiser to stay over in Tempe after night games, as there are enough road hazards on the road late at night...however, I do miss the drunks that call in to Devil Talk or whatever it's called after the games on the radio...nothing like "insight" from a "smashed" fan after a game...
I hadn't realized that Bo Graham played such a key role during games which has now meant moving Norvell to the press box to call plays...I know some wish he would relocate to Gila Bend for each game but that's not happening anytime soon and actually the offense rolled pretty effectively during the game against the Mustangs...they just had a difficult time, which apparently is a part of their Red Zone DNA, scoring inside the five yard line a couple of times, which brought out the Tums in vast quantities in the stands and on the Sun Devil sideline...I don't know about you but I have a hard time enjoying a win after consuming a bottle of antacid during games...things just don't taste right including beer and it's hard getting to sleep as well...
The reality is that the halftime score should've been 28-7, if we hadn't fumbled on the way to another late second quarter TD, and the second half would've been much more enjoyable, as it probably would've been about 42-14 entering the fourth quarter and Manny would've been the QB and all would've been well in Sun Devil land, aside from the injuries sustained during the game...
Of course, playing the "what if" game is fruitless but if we're going to play it...what if Davon Durant hadn't screwed up and was playing Devilbacker for us right now and what if George Lea had not messed up and was playing right now and what if Bo Graham hadn't messed up and was still coaching for us right now and what if Kalen Ballage hadn't contracted Mono and was playing right now...I dare say we'd all be in a much better mood these days if those "what ifs" hadn't transpired...
And, what if Berco was really a two dimensional QB, one who could run as well as he passes..?? How awesome would that be...
The reality is that neither Durant or Lea is playing for us right now and who knows when Ballage will be returning and Bo is gone and Norvell is in the press box and we're 1-1 in two games so far...Berco is Berco and he is one of the best passers in the nation and we have a lot of other good players on the team, so there's still a lot of football to be played and who knows how things are going to turn out in the coming weeks...
I'm not pleased with the losses of A Latu and A Perry for obvious reasons, although I think we have the depth along the DL to mitigate Latu's loss fairly well but Perry is a different story, as we aren't deep at safety so that's a big concern moving forward but maybe someone will step forward and do a really good job back there...
I'll be going back to Tempe on Friday for the game, which starts at 7pm, which is good in that I may get to bed before midnight with any luck...who knows, I may even tune in on the radio and listen to the drunks calling into Devil Talk...my son told me that there were some fans in the White Mtns, where he was watching the game, as he has that damned Direct TV, so can't get the PAC Network games, and by the end of the Cal Poly game, some of these fans were demanding that many players be pulled from their Sun Devil scholarships based on the way they played against the Mustangs...
So far, it's just that kind of a season in Tempe, which will just provide more Cardinal fans on Sundays, as they actually look pretty darn good after their big win against the Saints yesterday...I guess we had about 47K fans show up for the game in SDS and the "double inferno" was awesome...we'll probably have fewer fans on Friday since it's a week night and since it will be televised...oh well, maybe this won't be a Tums game and will be easier to digest as a result...one can only hope...
Championships or Bust...Go Devils!!!
