Monday practice report

ASU practiced outside today. The energy was certainly bumped up another notch from its usual high pace Monday at practice. Jordan Simone was first off the tram chanting "game week!" at the top of his lungs.

Green jerseys: Cam Smith, Tim White, Grant Martinez, Dillon Faamatau, Sam Jones.

White had the same cast on his arm as last week and didn't participate in anything today. I don't want to jump to conclusions but it's looking less and less likely that he would be able to play Saturday against Texas A&M.

Jason Lewis was in the dog house during drill work. Mike Norvell was not pleased (that's putting it very nicely) at him when he dropped a ball in ball security drills.

11 on 11:

First-team offense: Mike Bercovici (QB), Demario Richard (RB), D.J. Foster (WR), Devin Lucien (WR), Gump Hayes (WR), Kody Kohl (TE), Evan Goodman (LT), Christian Westerman (LG), Nick Kelly (C), Stephon McCray (RG), and Billy McGehee (RT).

First-team defense: Edmond Boateng (DE), Demetrius Cherry (nose), Ami Latu (Tiger), Christian Sam (WILL), Antonio Longino (DEVIL), Salamo Fiso (SAM), Laiu Moeakiola (SPUR), Lloyd Carrington (CB), Kweishi Brown (CB), Jordan Simone (S), and Armand Perry (S).

Second-team offense: Manny Wilkins (QB), Jacom Brimhall (RB), Fred Gammage (WR), Gary Chambers (WR), Ellis Jefferson (WR), Raymond Epps (TE), Zach Robertson (LT), Scout team member (LG), Scout team member (C), Connor Humphreys (RG), Quinn Bailey (RT)

*Note: First time Fred Gammage has been back out there in awhile. He shed his green jersey last week but hadn't seen any reps in the tempo period until today.

Second-team defense: JoJo Wicker (DE), Renell Wren (nose), Tashon Smallwood (Tiger), DJ Calhoun (WILL), Chans Cox (SAM), Alani Latu (DEVIL), Marcus Ball (Spur), Solomon Means (CB), Kareem Orr (CB), James Johnson (S), Chad Adams (S).

As far as how the tempo period went down, it seemed to be even more frantic than it usually is today. The speed down the field was extremely fast. There couldn't have been more than 20 seconds, maybe even less, between snaps. The offense didn't dominate by any means but worked the ball down field well with a solid balance of run and pass. Gump Hayes in particular seemed to have a good series. He made some excellent cuts in his routes and seemed to be open a lot even if he didn't get the ball.

The second team offense found more success but I was particularly impressed with Kareem Orr at 5-foot-11 covering a 6-foot-5 Ellis Jefferson. Orr really made the most of his reps and played some really good scrappy coverage against a much bigger body.

They pumped crowd noise in again during 11 on 11. Afterwords Todd Graham voiced the need for his defense to communicate better and louder so everyone gets on the same page.
