I didn't happen to catch who said it, but...
ASU was back at practice again Tuesday after a 1-0 start to the season in Saturday's 49-7 win over UTSA. Today's was the first practice of Week 2 as the Sun Devils prepare to host Michigan State.
Here's what Jordan Kaye and I saw:
LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Field
ATTIRE: Shorts
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: First three periods, approximately 40 minutes
STRETCH MUSIC: "2 Seater" by DJ Holiday Feat. Quavo & 21 Savage // "Workinme" by Quavo
IN GREEN: None
PERSONNEL NOTES
--Following the opening stretch period, we noticed the following players head into the bubble: K.J. Jarrell (R-Fr/DB), Ty Thomas (Soph./S), John Humphrey (R-Jr./WR) and Ryan Kelley(R-Fr./QB).
--After missing over two weeks, Jay Jay Wilson (R-Sr./LB) was back at practice today. Here's some video of him working with the linebackers:
--Zach Robertson (Soph./OL) had been in the bubble last week nursing a left knee injury and missed the UTSA game, but was back at practice for a portion of Tuesday morning. He worked out with the offensive line (as seen below), but did not participate in team drills.
--N'Keal Harry (Jr./WR) wasn't a part of team drills either — he was off to the side with strength coach Joe Connolly but didn't appear to be hurt in any way. He walked into practice late, following the stretching period.
--We didn't see Steven Miller (R-Jr./OL) anywhere at practice. He had missed a few practices, but was back last week and started against UTSA.
--Trelon Smith (Soph./RB) was also once again missing today. Herm Edwards said he'd miss this week for a "coach's decision."
11-ON-11
Here's a quick rundown of the teams and some of the notes we caught from today's viewing.
First-Team Offense
QB: Manny Wilkins
RB: Eno Benjamin
WR: Kyle Williams, Ryan Jenkins, Brandon Aiyuk/Frank Darby
TE: Tommy Hudson
OL: LT Casey Tucker, LG Alex Losoya, C Cohl Cabral, RG Roy Hemsley, RT Quinn Bailey
Second-Team Offense
QB: Dillon Sterling-Cole
RB: Isaiah Floyd/A.J. Carter
WR: Terrell Chatman, Ryan Newsome, Geordon Porter
TE: Ceejhay French-Love, Jared Bubak
OL: LT Tyson Rising, LG Spencer Lovell, C Jarrett Bell, RG Cade Cote, RT Ralph Frias/Zach Robertson
--Although Kurt Walding took the majority of last week's second-team snaps, we saw Dillon Sterling-Cole play the role of second-string against UTSA. He only took maybe three or four snaps in today's viewing — the first of which he dropped and the second of which he threw to no man's land — but he was able to connect on a couple of short routes.
--We weren't positive, but it looked like Ralph Frias was filling in for Robertson on the second-team offensive line; he was in a gold scout team jersey.
First-Team Defense
DL: Jalen Bates, Renell Wren, Shannon Foreman
LB: Merlin Robertson, Darien Butler, Malik Lawal
CB: Chase Lucas, Kobe Williams
TILLMAN: Das Tautalatasi
S: Langston Frederick (Field Ranger), Demonte King (Boundary Ranger)
Second-Team Defense
DL: Darius Slade/Doug Subtyl, George Lea/D.J. Davidson, Jordan Hoyt
LB: Kyle Soelle, Khaylan Thomas, Jay Jay Wilson
TILLMAN: Das Tautalatasi
CB: Terin Adams, Dom Harrison
S: Cam Phillips (Boundary Ranger), Langston Frederick (Field Ranger)
-- Frederick and Tautalatasi stayed on the field as the first- and second-teamers switch. Didn't see ranger Aashari Crosswell or Tillman Jalen Harvey during 11-on-11.
-- Jalen Bates and Renell Wren swarmed Manny just before he completed a deep pass to Frank Darby. Couldn't tell if they "sacked" him and they just kept playing or if Wilkins actually got the ball out in time.
-- There was an interesting moment when 6-foot-3, 256-pound linebacker Merlin Robertson rushed Wilkins from the right side and attempted to be blocked by 5-foot-7, 169-pound running back Isaiah Floyd. Floyd held his own for about a second but Wilkins took off with the ball.
-- Wide receiver Ryan Newsome came out of the slot and when he cut back toward the middle of the field, his defender, field ranger Langston Frederick, was no where in sight. Newsome ran to the end zone with no one else in sight.
QUOTES OF THE DAY
"You play to win the game!" -- Ryan Newsome
"Ah that's why you've got to get out here early. That's why I want you her early, to catch 10 or 15 kicks." -- John Simon after a dropped kick by Isaiah Floyd
"He has a full hoodie on, it's hella hot out here." -- Ryan Newsome on John Simon
"No, it's not." -- Paul Lucas
"You were born here, though." -- Newsome
That's it for today’s report. Stay tuned for more coverage throughout the week. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
