Hey guys, ASU was back at practice again Tuesday for a new week after falling to 2-1 this past Saturday. Here's what Jeff Griffith and I saw from the first practice in preparation for Washington:
LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Field
ATTIRE: Shells
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: First three periods, approximately 40 minutes
STRETCH MUSIC: "Bigger Than You" by 2 Chainz Feat. Drake & Quavo // "Big Bank" by YG Feat. 2 Chainz, Big Sean & Nicki Minaj
IN GREEN: Kyle Williams (Jr./WR)
PERSONNEL NOTES
--Following the opening stretch period, we noticed the following players head into the bubble: Ty Thomas (Soph./S), Caleb McShanag (R-Fr/DB), John Humphrey (R-Jr./WR), Ryan Kelley (R-Fr./QB), Terrell Chatman (R-Jr./WR), and Nami Tuitu'u (Soph./DL)
--After missing last week due to a finger injury, Darius Slade (R-Jr/DL) was back at practice today running with the second-team defensive line.
-- We are unsure of why Kyle Williams was in a green, no contact jersey. There were a few days last week that he did not practice, but the junior did play a good amount of snaps against San Diego State.
First-Team Offense
QB: Manny Wilkins
RB: Eno Benjamin/Trelon Smith
WR: N'Keal Harry, Ryan Newsome, Frank Darby
TE: Tommy Hudson/Ceejhay French-Love
OL: LT Zach Robertson, LG Casey Tucker, C Cohl Cabral, RG Steve Miller, RT Quinn Bailey
—Zach Robertson — who didn't start, but saw some reps this weekend — ran at first-team left tackle, moving Casey Tucker to left guard.
—Eno Benjamin had a couple of really nice carries, including a big run up the middle through a wide-open hole. Trelon Smith also saw his first major snaps at practice in a while, and had a couple of solid runs outside the tackles.
Second-Team Offense
QB: Dillon Sterling-Cole
RB: Isaiah Floyd
WR: Brandon Aiyuk, Geordon Porter, Ryan Jenkins
TE: Jared Bubak/Jarick Caldwell
OL: LT Tyson Rising, LG Roy Hemsley, C Cade Cote, RG Alex Losoya, RT Spencer Lovell
—Dillon Sterling-Cole, who has struggled in practice, and one really impressive deep ball, completed down the right hash to Frank Darby.
—The second-team offensive line was very mixed up from last week's Wednesday practice, with Cade Cote moving from RG to C, Spencer Lovell moving in at RT, and Alex Losoya moving from LG to RG. The shuffling probably had something to do with LG Roy Hemsley moving to second team from the first-team line last week.
First-Team Defense
DL: Jalen Bates, Renell Wren, Shannon Foreman
LB: Merlin Robertson, Darien Butler, Jay Jay Wilson
CB: Chase Lucas, Kobe Williams
TILLMAN: Jalen Harvey
S: Aashari Crosswell (Field Ranger), Demonte King (Boundary Ranger)
-- Wilkins threw a decent amount of screen passes Tuesday but cornerbacks Chase Lucas and Kobe Williams played them very well. Though they were playing off their receiver, both came back to the ball quick to make the tackle.
Second-Team Defense
DL: Doug Subtyl/Darius Slade, George Lea/D.J. Davidson, Jordan Hoyt/Darius Slade
LB: Malik Lawal, Khaylan Thomas, Koron Crump/Kyle Soelle ***
TILLMAN: Evan Fields
CB: Terin Adams, Dom Harrison
S: Cam Phillips (Boundary Ranger), Aashari Crosswell (Field Ranger)
*** Robertson, Butler and Wilson stayed on the field for the entirety of the 11-on-11 period but Lawal, Thomas and Soelle were standing on the sideline ready to go in for the second team but the period was cut short.
QUOTES OF THE DAY
ASU's linebackers were hitting the sled and linebackers coach Antonio Pierce wasn't thrilled with how hard they were pushing it. He kept bringing up things the group did poorly against SDSU and reminding them how big and physical Washington is.
"You're moving that thing two yards," he said. "It needs to move five, it's not a lineman."
That's all from today's practice; we'll be back out tomorrow as the Sun Devils continue to prepare for Washington. Stay tuned for more coverage throughout the week. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
