For Tuesday's practice, Jack Loder (@JackLoder_) observed the offense and Cole Topham (@HamAnalysis) observed the defense.
Offense
Offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh is always one of the loudest and recognizable voices on the Kajikawa practice fields. On Tuesday morning, he wasted no time verbally pumping energy into a group that took the practice field with a little less energy than he would have liked.
“Let’s see some ENERGY! Pick it up!” He shouted as he clapped his hands. “Need more energy out of you guys today!”
The offensive linemen responded to their leader as they usually do, perking up and grunting with approval. The next few snaps featured quicker jumps, harder hits, and an overall more boisterous group of linemen and backs. As the midway point of the preseason approaches, being able to replicate the energy that is so abundant early on but often elusive in the middle weeks is vital. 16 days away from the season opener, the offense as a whole is looking to bring it each and every day.
Attendance
Guard Armon Bethea missed his second straight practice with a minor injury. Freshman tight ends Jack Cole and Jacob Newell were absent as expected, while tackle Emmit Bohle dawned a green non-contact jersey. Tight end transfer Messiah Swinson fully participated without the non-contact designation for the second straight day.
Position Drills
While the offensive linemen lacked some energy to start the day, the pass catchers picked up the slack. The group bounced between high octane drills all morning long, executing crisp routes and audibly supporting each other throughout. Elijhah Badger shined early on, making nice catches in the brief post-route drill.
The linemen and backs took center stage on the south side of the field as usual. The group worked on pulling right and opening running lanes, with Daniyel Ngata and Xazavian Valladay taking handoffs and hitting the holes with speed and precision. Christ Martinez and Ladarius Henderson were quick off the snap in each of their reps, earning them verbal praise from Cavanaugh and other coaches in the group.
The quarterbacks threw to each other during this period. Emory Jones played catch with Paul Tyson and Trenton Bourguet worked in as well. Finn Collins and Bennet Meredith worked on their drops while tossing between each other.
When the QBs joined the linemen for a brief walk-through, Emory Jones took snaps with the first team line (Ben Scott at center). Center Ben Bray next snapped to Trenton Bourguet and Bennett Meredith. In the 11 on air period, Ngata and Valladay received carries mostly from Jones, as an emphasis on the run game was highlighted.

Conservative was the name of the game in the brief 11-on-11 period that was open to the media. Jones found Giovanni Sanders and Elijhah Badger on identical crossing patterns. Trenton Bourguet then threaded the needle between two DBs to find Chad Johnson. An explosive run play from Daniyel Ngata was the highlight of the offense’s run game during 11 on 11. The gap between the offense and defense has shrunk considerably, but the defense was still having its way for the most part. Emory Jones’ lone incompletion went for an interception, as a pass intended for Sanders was broken up and picked by DB Alphonso Taylor.
