The introductory press conference for Bobby Hurley was interesting. Here are a few thoughts.
- People are pumped for Stan Johnson to be sticking around on staff. There was a round of applause among donors, staff, and students when his name was mentioned.
- Hurley looked uncomfortable talking about his accolades. I've heard that he's a humble guy, but when he said "I have a recognizable name" in response to how he'd be able to compete as a recruiter in California, and "I'm the all-time assist leader" in response to the type of unselfish offense he plans to run, it almost seemed forced. He's a "prove it" guy, always has been, so it'll be interesting to see how much he embraces his own accolades as a way of using bravado to fire up the fan base.
- Ray Anderson stated that this was the one offer ASU made to any coach. Take that however you want to I suppose.
- Hurley said he wants to play man to man defense, and give players freedom on offense. He said that shot clock violations aren't a part of his coaching style.
- He didn't address specifics about the roster, and considering his wife, kids, parents, and assistant coach Watkins all flew out with him one day after getting back from Aruba, it's likely that he hasn't spent much time dissecting what he'll be working with in terms of talent.
- Despite reports coming out about his falling out with Buffalo's AD over contract negotiations, he was positive and upbeat about his experience there.
