Last night I was out at Thunderbird High to see them take on Notre Dame Prep. There wasn't anyone on either team that I thought ASU fans should look out for, but I did want to get a close up look at the young man who replaced Kani Benoit (now at Oregon) in the Chiefs' offense- 2016 RB Dominique King.
King is listed at 5'8", 190, which is four inches shorter than Benoit. King also doesn't have Benoit's top end speed (He runs just under a 4.6), but there were a lot of things to like about King that make me think he could be a legit mid-major RB/Slot WR prospect- and as we've seen in the case of guys like Tyler McClure, some FCS and mid-majo recruits choose to walk on at ASU instead of leave the state.
King was the best player on the field in the first half. His incredibly agile, and makes defenders miss without quick-jerk shiftiness of other scat-backs. Instead, he's smooth and under control when cutting, juking and hitting the corners- reminded me a little of former KC Chiefs WR Dante Hall with the way he was able to vanish from in front of tacklers. King ended the fist half with 87 yards and a TD on 12 carries, including a 42 yard run, and a 26 yad TD run.
In the second half King vanished. He carried the ball, according to my tally, 6 times for 10 yards, and seemed to only getting the ball on sweeps, which Notre Dame was keyed in on and blew up.
I think if King was on Chandler or Saguaro you'd see him getting some college attention, but out at Thunderbird, college attention is uncommon.
