Tonight I was in Las Vegas watching defending National Champion Bishop Gorman beat Arizona powerhouse Chandler 35-14.
I focused on a few players, first from Chandler was 2017 Kolby Taylor. This is Kolby’s third season on varsity, he was brought up as a freshman and contributed as a RB/WR during his sophomore campaign (which was a championship year for the Wolves). Kolby does a lot of things well, and he is probably the best blocking receiver I’ve personally seen come out of the state of Arizona (and he is barely halfway through his high school career). Kolby runs clean routes and has great hands. Kolby had some nice catches highlighted by a 30 yard catch and run against a talented Gorman secondary (led by ASU commit Alex Perry, and all everything Tyjon Lindsey- who we will talk about in a second). With two older brothers that have played receiver at Division 1 schools, and in the case of ASU alum Kerry, professionally, Kolby has a receiver’s pedigree. Kolby is not overly emotional and leads by example. Kolby is on ASUs radar and has a good relationship with the current coaching staff. We likely haven’t seen the best of Kolby yet, as he has has talented wide receivers Chase Lucas and N’keal Harry on the field with him. That’ll change next year when he becomes Chandler’s number 1 receiver.
Bishop Gorman’s all-everything athlete Tyjon Lindsey is also an ASU target. Lindsey is a playmaker/game-breaker, and he showcased both of those talents on Gorman’s first drive, carrying the offense 49 yards on two plays to set up Gorman’s first TD, and early in the 2nd quarter when he got behind Chandler’s secondary and caught a 30 yard touchdown pass from Tate Martell. Then on Defense in the fourth quarter, Tyjon broke Chandler’s hearts with a nasty sideline interception where he pivoted and contorted his body while running backwards. That interception stopped a Chandler drive and gave the Gaels momentum to close out the Wolves.
