Saturday’s practice found the players in full pads for the first time this fall as James Brown got the vibe for practice up. Major excitement radiated through the warmup lines as refs were in attendance, and the off the field news of Arizona State joining the Big 12 was made official yesterday evening. The news in turn brought athletic director Ray Anderson and university president Michael Crow to the practice field.

The first bit of individual (drills) would see the guys doing their normal routine, today obviously being able to take on a bit more contact. The offensive line was breaking in the thigh/knee pads as they got low, getting square. They worked on bags still to begin.

The first bit of contact was brought to you by the skill positions in the ball security portion. Two groups on either side of the field were in familiar offensive sets. A running back or receiver would get the ball and turn upfield. Similar to what we’ve seen in the past days. Although coaches yelled, “stay up”, boys will be boys. Running backs lowered their shoulders, and receivers took hits along the sideline from linebackers keeping everyone waiting for what team period would look like.

Although that drill went smoothly for the most part, there were instances of dropped balls or dead plays. We will never know if it was those first day in full pads jitters that players get, but that could be assumed.

Tempo period came around, and Jaden Rashada got the call first with the first teamers. Trenton Bourguet and Drew Pyne are still getting the most reps and are clear to be the 1-2 for quarterbacks. Nonetheless, Rashada found Guillory early to start his time. Rashada would end his five plays going 3/4 on top of a scramble. Bourguet took the ropes with the second line finding Jake Smith once and Andre Johnson twice. Bourguet also had an incompletion to Smith, with Gio Sanders dropping a ball to end the period.

The team went back into individual drills. Besides team periods, there was not an insane amount of contact within the smaller group portions. Going back to lineman quickly, Saga Tuitele had a great quote telling his lineman, “If you use technique, and it doesn’t work, you need another rep”. Tuitele continuing his explanation first style of coaching.

Receivers stayed in their usual two groups. One group being more the active guys while the second group being more of the third-fourth teamers. Elijhah Badger and his ever-growing leadership Samples has touched on led the group in a lot of footwork today. After attacking balls, the players did variations of movements through/around cones catching balls through bags. Don’t ever be surprised to see Guillory, Melquan Stovall, Sanders and Coben Bourguet ready to follow right away.

Quarterbacks would get into throwing routes on air with tight ends first, and receivers following. The tight ends ran variations of routes, especially down the sideline or towards the back of the endzone. Beau Baldwin (QB Coach/Offensive Coordinator) asked for quarterbacks to put some touch on the ball. Similar themes to pass practices as Dillingham wanted quarterbacks putting balls in certain spots. The coaching went in through the time with the receivers as quarterbacks were asked to not rush balls to receivers on their routes.

Looking past the routes on air, running backs and linebackers got more of that physical energy going with the linebackers as they ran routes of the backfield being pressed in coverage by linebackers. Linebackers would simulate a tackle or got beat. All running backs look good coming out of the backfield, but Jacobs and Kyson Brown especially look shiftier out of the backfield.

A short team Run-Pass-Option followed, having a rough start with Pyne at the helm. There was a fall start and a fumble by Jacobs. As Bourguet came in with Brown, a little light shined as Brown had a big run with the second o-line in. Another great completion to Sanders had the group feeling good before Ed Woods broke up a ball intended for Guillory.

Moving past another special team’s period, the Main Event period quickly saw the defense dominate as the highlight was Jordan Clark (DB) and Dee Ford (DB) receptions on receivers in coverage.

7v7 followed as the groups got right to work. Bourguet got the ball first with the first group starting at the 20 yd line and going towards the endzone. Each time the ball reset after a touchdown needing a first down in between if need be. Bourguet went 4/4, completing passes to Guillory, Swinson, and Conyers, who eventually caught the touchdown. Pyne took over and scored in two plays finding Sanders for a nice grab. Rashada rotated in, finding Sanders, Sinjin Schmitt, and Troy Omeire for the touchdown. Bourguet came back in going 3/4, connecting with Stovall for another TD. The offense rolling and pointing to Bourguet.

Team followed as the emphasis was situational football, something the defense has dominated in. That’s they did as the offense being put in third and fourth down situations, punted a lot to start. Physicality began right away, though as Xavion Alford tackled Brooks violently.

Both Quarterbacks struggled early in the period as it transitioned out of the situational emphasis going back into red zone/regular offense. It was until about the fifth rotation where Pyne was in the redzone. Runs by White and Brown set up a Guillory pitch and catch touchdown. PAT’s followed touchdowns which were all made on the day.

The second team was in as they and Bourguet responded after a Jacobs ran in for a quick touchdown. Rashada saw some more action with the first line as he found Sanders in the back of the endzone for a touchdown. Sanders as seen having a great day of practice.

Bourguet resumed play but did not get much done having an incompletion to Smith and eventually getting sacked by Sam Benjamin. The offense settled for an Ian Hershey field goal. (Dario Longhetto still starting and taking almost all kicks today). Before practice concluded, Rashada got one last crack at some play time. Jacobs and Schmitt taking bulk of the load before Rashada had two completions to Shawn Charles. The day ending on a high ball, overthrown by Rashada. This wraps up the first full week of fall camp for the Dillingham era Sun Devils.
