Mornin Mates...
Today's Topic = What makes a good coach ?
I guess we'll find out pretty soon what Jeff Capel decides to do regarding the ASU basketball coaching job...Duke is now in the national championship game against the Wisconsin Badgers who beat undefeated Kentucky last night...I have no idea who will win the game but it should be a great game in any event...
Hansen points out in the Star this morning that a "Capel hire wouldn't intimidate PAC-12 coaches" which is undoubtedly true, and that certainly isn't the reason for RA to hire him, either...I doubt that his hire, if it happens, would intimidate any PAC fans or wow them much for that matter, unless being an assistant at Duke carries more weight than I think it does...
Recruiting to Duke and Oklahoma would have to be much easier than getting elite talent to ASU, as we all know, which is not to say that it couldn't be done but only that it will involve much hard work and great selling to overcome the current perception of ASU basketball, which is not exactly good...
This brings me to my question this morning which is...what makes a coach a good one..??
We all know that talent is destiny but you can tell some coaches are just better at their business than others as their records show, so I'm wondering this fine Easter morning what facets of coaching are key, especially if talent is taken out of the equation..??
Is it the offensive scheme that is run or the defensive scheme used..??
Is it the preparation leading up to each game in terms of strategy..??
Is it the ability to find and then exploit another teams weaknesses..??
Is it the ability to adapt to whatever is happening out on the court at any given time..??
What do you all think the three to five most important things are in coaching not related to recruiting that can elevate you as a coach..??
You can tell someone like Shaka Smart, who was just hired by Texas, is a superior coach but what makes him that..??
It sure looked like Chris Mack at Xavier is cut from the same mold in terms of elevating the talent on hand to reach maximum potential and, if so, why is that..??
Sean Miller is a very good coach but is that because he is a superior recruiter as opposed to other coaching variables..??
Jeff Capel won over 30 games one season with Blake Giffin playing for the Sooners but when he left and some other really good players left, the Sooners went down hill fast...
So, are you really only as good as your players..??
And, is that the primary reason RA is trying to hire Capel...to get better players to ASU or is there more to it than that..??
I'll be interested to see what you all think...
On another note, I made the mistake of turning off the ASU-Utah baseball game heading into the 9th inning last evening, when I thought they were going to lose since they really hadn't done much the whole game and were losing by a couple of runs but was pleasantly surprised to later find out that they had come back and won the game...
Was that due to superior coaching or what exactly..??
Finally, we had a visit from a swarm of bees the other day when they decided to invade our outside grill and make it their home...there were hundreds, if not thousands of them, humming their way to a huge hive inside the grill...we had to call the Bee Busters (that was their name-who you gonna call) to come over and get rid of them...
The interesting thing to watch was how each bee knew their job and went about doing it without pause or deliberation...maybe they would be great players for some coach somewhere...nothing self centered about what they were doing...their team was definitely more than the sum of all of its parts taken to an exponential degree...the whole was much greater than its individual parts...I don't know who was coaching them but they definitely knew what they were doing and were very focused on the task at hand...
We now have our grill back as the swarm has gone someplace else, I guess, but it was a very interesting phenomenon to watch and I trust that our new basketball approach will be just as interesting and entertaining to watch once a new coach is hired...
Well, hope you all have a good Easter and also hope we get a good coach this week...one who can finally elevate our program like those bees elevated our grill into a hive of high energy and activity...
G'day Mates...Championships or Bust...Go Devils!!!
