Mornin Mates...
Today's Topic = One and Done
We just got back from Roper Lake near Safford where we stayed for a few days in our trailer...it was very windy but it was peaceful and the lake camping area was great...very nice facilities in a beautiful setting...just good to get away occasionally, even if it means giving up sites like this for a few days...
One of our neighbor's was a trapeze artist who had returned from Japan, where she had performed and she just got a call from Cirque du Soleil, that she was very excited about as that means she's hit the big time...she's trying to decide whether to return to Japan or go to Florida to join Cirque there...
I don't know about you but I've never known a circus performer before much less a trapeze artist...she was from Atlantic City in NJ, where I grew up, so we talked about our upbringing there, although she is obviously less than half my age...very slender with not an ounce of fat anywhere and great body tone...
She had recently purchased an RV and was touring the country with a friend, while trying to figure out what she wanted to do next...continue with her career or retire and do something else...however, once Cirque called, her decision became easy and Japan also wanted her back with a good offer...
Who says you need college to have a great life when you can join the circus and see the world...
I was interested when Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri questioned the "one and done" college basketball situation because, to her, that has nothing to do with being a "student-athlete" since those highly regarded players aren't going to college to study but, rather, to get ready for the NBA, and nothing more, and I have to agree with her...shouldn't "student-athletes" really be in college to get an education that leads to a degree, while competing in whatever sport they are involved in and not just staying for a short period of time while bidding their time for the NBA..??
What do you all think..??
Duke may have won the national championship but Wisconsin had a team full of players who had gone to school for years and stayed together as a team, while actually being student-athletes at the school...
Of course, I hope and trust that Bobby Hurley will bring some of those potential NBA players to ASU, so we can compete with the big boys, instead of just being a member of a conference that plays basketball with some big boys occasionally...
The Star this morning pointed out in Hansen's Sunday column that "New ASU coach Hurley has shown short fuse" because in two seasons at Buffalo he's been called for 11 technical fouls, while his Buffalo team this past season was called for 19 technical fouls (Hurley had four) which was probably the highest in college basketball...against Toledo in February, Bobby received a technical only 55 seconds into the game...
Of course, this just gets me more fired up about our basketball fortunes moving forward under Bobby...no more Mr Nice Guy pacing the sidelines while we get jobbed by the refs in games...hopefully, he won't be the Sun Devil version of Mike Stoops, who has now been relegated to the press box instead of the sidelines at Oklahoma due to his infamous antics there...
In any event, I'd rather have visible passion than passionless control in any sport...
What about you..??
The Star also has an article entitled "Hurley has a long way to go to catch Miller" in today's paper...their respective backgrounds are very similar, as each comes from a basketball family where their fathers were very successful coaches, had involved siblings, good to great college careers, and with Hurley going onto the pros while Miller didn't...
The biggest area in which Bobby needs to make up ground on Sean is in recruiting, obviously...the Star points out that MIller has signed 13 players from California that were four star or higher while Sendek only signed one during the same time span compared to MIller and we all know what happened with Keala King...Harden was pre-Sean Miller...the key for Hurley will be to recruit both Cal and Arizona well, although Hurley has said that he is going to recruit nationally...
Secondly, as we all know, it will be important for Bobby to "use his name" to score recruiting points with players and their families...I guess having great recruiters on your staff will also help a lot...the addition of Brian Merritt to Hurley's staff is interesting, as he apparently has great contacts in the AAU world, although he doesn't have any coaching experience...
Finally, it was good to see that we got another WR in Tim White which, as we all know, was a position of need...can't wait for him to show up this summer, getting ready to play this Fall for the Sun Devils!!!
Well, how do you all feel about the "one and done" situation and about the passion Hurley will exhibit during basketball games based on his past two seasons at Buffalo..??
Have a great week...
G'day Mates...Championships or Bust...Go Devils!!!
