Mornin Mates...
Today's Topic = Crow vs Robbins
President Crow has been at ASU since 2002, while Robbins has been at AU since 2017...
AU leads the Territorial Cup Series 4-2 since Robbins arrived in Tucson and the Cats have maintained a decisive advantage in basketball while the Sun Devils have been better in football...
The Cats have also been to the CWS during Robbins tenure while the Devils haven't done much during this time frame...
I bring this up this morning, since in Greg Hansen's Sunday Notebook in the Daily Star, he calls Robbins a great leader and innovator, especially since Robbins held an athletic summit in Wash, DC this past week at the Cats Center for Outreach and Collaboration, that Robbins brought into existence three years ago...
The Summit was called The Future of College Athletics that was attended by some very heavy hitters in the college sports world...
They included NCAA executive director, Charlie Baker, SEC commissioner, Greg Sankey, ACC commissioner, Jim Phillips, Knight Commission CEO, Amy Privette Perko, Clemson AD, Graham Neff, and Kansas president, Douglas Girod, along with Oliver Luck...
Also included were some of the big names in college sports media that included ESPN's, Paul Finebaum, Heather Dinich, and Pete Thamel, the Athletic's, Max Olsen, and Sports Illustrated, Ross Dellenger...
The three main issues discussed were 1) conference realignment, 2) NIL finances, and 3) the transfer portal...
On another note, when asked about the possibility of AU and ASU going separate ways in the future, Robbins responded this way...
"We don't have to do the same thing. But president Crow and I are very, very tight. I think it unlikely that we'd split up"...
Furthermore, Robbins said "My prediction is that we are going to stay together in the PAC-12. There's ten of us right now. I'm hopeful that the TV media-rights deal is going to be good enough to keep us together."
Hansen concludes that "Robbins put Arizona athletics on the map last week in Washington, DC in a way a football victory over USC or an appearance in the CWS can't."
So, is Robbins a bigger fan of college sports than Crow and should Crow be doing more to enhance the Sun Devils big three sports, especially..??
And, are Robbins and Crow really "very, very tight" when it comes to their world views regarding the PAC (and college athletics at their respective schools for that matter)..??
I think that Crow sees athletics as a nuisance that he has to deal with more than he would like to and that Robbins takes pleasure in taking a leadership role in AU's sports...
It's personal for Robbins while it's just another part of business for Crow, IMHO...
I'll await your feedback, as always...
G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!
