Mornin Mates...
Today's Topic = A Slacker's Guide to Preseason Football Practice
A big time Sun Devil booster was nice enough to provide some fall preseason practice information, which I will now share with my mates, with my usual smart-ass commentary attached...
The troops report on Tuesday, Aug 4th, when they will check in and be welcomed to their new accommodations and become official 2015 Sun Devils...
At the top of the agenda list for the day it states "Rooms need to look like Champions"...
It also says that all meals are mandatory and that wake up each day will be 6am...
I'm not sure where this leaves me as I haven't made a bed ever, as far as I can remember, often skip meals and usually hit the snooze button when an alarm goes off at 6am...
Doesn't Coach Graham know that there are perfectly good reasons why we are known as a Sleeping Giant..??
It sure as heck isn't because we get up at 6am each morning...
After breakfast, which is from wake up until around 7am, the team has general and unit meetings for most of the rest of the morning...
Meanwhile, I'm probably having my first cup of coffee around 8:30 and trying to wake up enough to do my morning chores, that include turning on the TV and buttering some toast...
My wife always has a daily agenda produced for my benefit which I usually totally ignore...
So, I could be ready for some team meetings by around 11am or thereabouts, if the coaching staff really felt the need for those meetings...
Then they want the team to Stand Up and Be Counted and I'm not sure what they are after with this idea...is it a way to take attendance each day and if I get a note from my wife excusing my presence will that suffice..??
Lunch is usually going to be from around 11am to 1pm, which would be my breakfast hour, so I'm already a meal behind and wonder what the downside might be for that..??
I hate the thought of having to get down and do push-ups while I'm hungry...
After lunch, there are more meetings which I'm pretty sure I could make as long as they are over by my daily cocktail hour around 4pm...
Part of the afternoon team building exercises ask this question of each individual team member...Are You a Giver or Taker, which I'm pretty sure is not a trick question...
My answer would be that I would gladly Take whatever it is that you are willing to Give me but I'm not sure that's the right answer...
After a couple of days, they begin practicing for hours at a time in both the morning and afternoon and also do some weight lifting and conditioning work...
I figure this will give me ample opportunity to work on my golf game and catch up on reading the paper and checking out this site for any good gossip, etc...
When it comes time to pack up and go to Camp T the team question becomes Bright Eyed or Dulled Eyed, which to me depends on how much kool-aid I have consumed by then...
All I know is that if I was following this schedule in Tempe I would be in a hospital somewhere, if not dead, by the time Camp T arrived...
While at Camp T, the questions asked are about giving respect, building character and having a winning attitude...
Admittedly, I probably have not given the Sun Devils the respect they deserve while "speaking victory" under Graham and his staff at ASU, and that my character needs much improvement, and that having a winning attitude is still available to me even at my age (but then again why start now..??)...
Well, in closing, I have to applaud these guys for the Effort they put forth on our behalf as Sun Devils and I will try to put forth the effort to be a good fan and root hard for them this season...
Lights don't go out until around 10:30 at night and I have this beat since, generally, I'm in bed by 9:30...
This does pose this final question in my mind...if lights are supposed to be out by 10:30 what happens on game nights when kick-off isn't until 7:30 and the game doesn't get over until 11:30 or thereabouts, given all the TV timeouts, etc..??
Do we all have to do push-ups for missing the lights out deadline..??
It's amazing to me that these players are actually supposed to attend classes and study as students, while meeting all of these football practice, training and conditioning requirements...
It makes me weary just thinking about it...
Well, off to make my bed......not going to happen as my wife has 12 pillows adorning the bed and some sort of sleeves under the bed and sheets, blankets and bedspreads, etc, on the mattress and Lord knows what else is involved, as I can't even get in the bed half the time, once made up, which may be why women put all these obstacles in place to begin with...
It's just another test to be understood and completed in life......just like those tests our Sun Devils are required to undergo as student-athletes at ASU...
The smell of football is finally in the air...enjoy...
G'day Mates...Championships or Bust...Go Devils!!!
