Mornin Mates...
Today's Topic = Connectivity
My ride to Camp T fell through so I didn't make it this year and went fishing instead...however, I wasn't too upset because of the way we are all connected to what is happening with the team on a daily and hourly basis, which is in stark contrast to when the Devils practiced at Camp T under Kush, when you were either there taking it all in or waiting on the media to report on things via newscasts or in the morning paper...
While fishing yesterday, with a neighbor, we heard others around a nearby lake talking on the phone and, who knows what else, while they were "fishing"...they probably then shared their fishing experiences with the world or at least with their Facebook Friends afterwards...
None of them caught any fish but we did and you have to wonder if our lack of "connectivity" in the moment may have had something to do with it...Graham talks about how nice it is at Camp T where things are pretty primitive electronically, which forces the team to interact more, bond, and "galvanize" as he likes to say...they're also forced by these circumstances to pay closer attention to the matters at hand, I would guess...
I missed seeing the Devils in person just to verify that they really are that big and strong and fast but it doesn't take much imagination, given all the coverage here and elsewhere, to conclude, without seeing them, that they really are that big, strong and fast and most importantly...talented and athletic...
I read somewhere that there were more than 6,500 fans at the scrimmage and the field looked to be surrounded by fans sitting here, there, and everywhere, even though temperatures were approaching 100 degrees and were undoubtedly over 100 degrees on the field under those conditions...
Maybe someday some money can be found or donated to not only improve the overall football facilities but to also improve the seating conditions at the camp...however, since the the camp doesn't last long and since there is only one scrimmage, that probably doesn't make much economic sense...
Getting back to the subject at hand, I wonder how many fans were posting pictures of themselves at the "event" for all their followers to see...I've lost track of all the ways you can get your message out there in the electronic universe through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc...
I know all this connectivity creates a different reality of sorts, for when you go to the stores up here to look for college football magazines, they are dwarfed by the amount of "fantasy football" magazines on the stands, as opposed to real magazines about football...
Anyway, it looks like Graham and his program now have the fandom "traction" they've been looking for since arriving in Tempe four years ago based on the steady increase in attendance at Camp T and other venues as well...
I'm hopeful that traction will carry over to home game attendance at SDS, although when the season starts, around Labor Day, when temperatures are still well over 100 degrees, that is asking a lot, especially since all of the games are televised...
It's so very tempting to just stay home in the comfort of familiar surroundings, while you watch the game on a HD television, with beer in hand, while the air conditioning is humming along keeping you cool and a bathroom is nearby as needed...plus you can switch to other games during commercials or go on line and catch the latest on whatever subject you want, etc...
I haven't figured this "connectivity" out yet and probably never will but know that young people especially embrace the medium or mediums as a means of self expression, that oftentimes replaces the "real deal" as far as I'm concerned...
To get into the spirit of things, I guess I need to establish a Facebook page so I can take a "selfie" when I catch a fish or pick the winner at the horse races, so I can "share" it with everyone else, as that appears to be part of the "real deal" these days...it's like giving myself a well deserved "trophy" every time I do something insignificant...
On the plus side, I'm totally convinced that we are going to have an awesome team this year thanks in large part to all of this connectivity available to all of us Sun Devils...
BTW, I know a lot of people who could've cared less about football but since "fantasy football" was introduced they are now fans and follow certain teams and players religiously...
Oh well, the season is now only a few weeks away and the electronic postcards will be flowing from SDS very soon as a result...
I'm not missing the heat down south and hope that the temperatures will break in time for the season opener but will not be holding my breath...
G'day Mates...Championships or Bust...Stay Connected...Go Devils!!!
