I like this new offensive weapon used against the Bruins last night to seal the win as it was truly a team effort when K Ballage was escorted to the Bruins end zone by a host of Sun Devils...
After last weekends pathetic effort against the Trojans the Devils took care of business in Pasadena and showed signs of life after a September to forget for the most part...
Who knows...maybe this will turn out to be Graham's best ASU team so far...
So, let's look at our four critical categories or keys to victory variables...
Turnovers...both teams had one interception, with the Devils INT leading to 3 pts and the Bruins INT leading to 7 pts, so that was a push and obviously much better than what happened against the Trojans last week, when we had four TOs and lost big...Graham preaches ball security because that leads to wins...there were no fumbles by either team...
Special Teams...game ball goes to Matt Haack for his wonderful punting all night and with his last punt that went out of bounds at the Bruins one yard line late in the game...he had 8 punts for 345 yds and a 43.1 yard average, with a long of 63 yards...we also consistently had un-returnable kickoffs which didn't allow the Bruins to hurt us as in the past...
Big Plays...Berco's 34 yard TD run in the third quarter was a thing of beauty and was the big play of the game, plus the Devils didn't give up any 80 yd TD passes or 70 yd runs as they have in other games played so far...two of which were losses...
Rushing...ASU had 192 yds rushing while the Bruins were held to 62 yards and you know what I always say...YOU PASS FOR SHOW BUT RUN FOR THE DOUGH and that's exactly what happened yesterday in the Rose Bowl...
So, we're back in the PAC race and are no longer the most "disappointing team" of the college football world after bad losses to A&M and USC...
Stanford sure looks like the team to beat in the North while the South could end up any number of ways in the coming weeks and ASU will have a large role to play in that race...
Utah hosts Cal and the Sun Devils the next two weekends before traveling to LA to face the Trojans...
If the Utes take care of those teams they will most likely win the South since they do not have any losses so far but that will be a very tall task, as we all know...
The Utes are big believers in not beating themselves and seldom do, so teams have to beat them, which is never easy to do in SLC...
Anyway, the PAC South is wide open and we're back in the hunt after a shaky start...
In other news, basketball season is just around the corner and Hurley has me pretty excited about the upcoming Sun Devil season...
Well, I know you all will have a great week and I hope to see you all at the Colorado game next weekend...
