That's the way our friend Greg Hansen calls the transfer portal this morning in the newspaper down here and he makes some good points, I think...
He asks..."want to move up in the sports world and pursue your happiness in the sport of your choice"..??
Then, all you have to do is contact your school's compliance officer and, in a little over two days, you too, could be driving a new car, dreaming of playing in the Rose Bowl or making it to the Final Four...
Applalachian State DL - Troy Everett - entered the portal last Saturday and subsequently got a call from Virginia Tech one minute after the word was out there and, within a few hours, he had scholarship offers from Oklahoma, Illinois, Maryland, MIssouri and Virginia Tech...
Deon Sanders also offered him a scholarship at Colorado who, as the Buffs new coach, had watched 22 Buffaloes leave his program, while gaining 27 transfers from the portal...
By this past Tuesday's evening, the PAC had welcomed 141 transfers, while another 204 had exited the conference on their way to another destination...
The transfer portal reminds Hansen of the Capital One commercials starring Derek Jeter and Charles Barkley, where Jeter gets picked to pinch hit in a rec league baseball game and Barkley gets picked over several undersized teenagers in a pick-up basketball game...
"Capital One calls it the easiest decision you can ever make" that equates it to the way portal transfers treat their decision to transfer these days in college sports, according to Hansen...
And, things, oftentimes, happen at lightening speed, as the above example shows...
Another example...AU contacted QB Jayden de Laura only minutes after he entered the portal in January of 2022...
On a related matter, Utah St star guard - Steven Ashworth - entered the portal after his coach - Ryan Odum - left Utah St for the coaching job at VCU...
Ashworth pointed out to Aggie fans that after "experiencing three coaching changes since HS, I've realized it's time to explore all my options and find the best fit for me and my family (he's married) moving forward...
Creighton swooped in quickly and Ashworth decided to become a Blue Jay, after also considering Washington and told reporters that those schools offered him the best NIL deals...
Then, Hansen takes a jab at ASU by pointing out that Bobby Hurley, annually, seems to trade a "dime a dozen" guard, who averages about 11 pts per game, for another comparable guard, that averages about 11 pts per game...
Hansen concludes by saying that "if a coach can move then a player should be able to move without restrictions but, maybe, just once, to settle things down a little, as some players have been to as many different colleges as they've played their sport in college...
Some have become "vagabonds" who have attended as many as four different schools in four years...
I don't know if that is the answer but sure hope that the portal helps our three big Sun Devils sports get better in the coming years...
So, as a college sports fan, is the transfer portal a "highway to happiness" for you..??
I would be very happy if, for instance, Bobby was able to get a "game changer" like Aari McDonald turned out to be for the ladies Cats basketball team a few years ago...
She changed the complexion of their program almost over-night and, in BB especially, it might only take one player to make a huge program changing difference, right..??
I don't know if the transfer portal is a "highway to happiness" for me but it certainly is entertaining and interesting to watch, as far as I'm concerned...
There is never a dull moment these days in the big money producing and bill paying sports thanks to the transfer portal, is there..??
Is it giving you more enjoyment or heartburn, as a fan, both of college sports in a broad sense or Sun Devil sports more narrowly..??
Go Devils!!!
