Hansen's article in the Star today is entitled "Passion returns to Territorial Cup series"...
"Arizona walloped the Sun Devils 17-6 Tuesday but what did it really matter as the Devils had already clinched the Territorial Cup baseball point and is destined for the NCAA tournament while AU is twisting in the wind"...
Hansen, who is from Utah, always thought the Utah-BYU rivalry was the most fierce he had seen until he started covering the ASU-AU rivalry down here...
He goes onto say that "the Sun Devils have changed their personality and platform over the last five years - the Greg Byrne years at AU - and are no longer the punching bag they were during the aimless reign of Lisa Love"...
He also says that the Sun Devils pulled into Tucson this past week to celebrate its growing success as it wanted Tucson to know that it is Sun Devil country and that ASU wasn't conceding anything to AU anywhere in the state...
He said that Greg Byrne was the first to tread ambitiously into the Valley to declare Phoenix Wildcat Turf, which ate at ASU like never before and is why Ray Anderson has "taken names and kicked butts in his first year on the job"...
We know that this is pure spin on Hansen's part...that AU is responsible for what has been happening at ASU the past several years when, in reality, that was not the main impetus for what has happened...Herb had beaten AU on an equal footing, the Sun Devil baseball program held serve against the Cats under Esmay, and the football program more than held its own against the Cats, etc...
The reality is that Crow realized that his PC hire of LL was a big mistake and needed to be corrected, especially since the athletic district was coming on-line and that fundraising had been lagging for Sun Devil athletics, because it lacked any sort of bold vision, that included such things as championships, as that is what fans and boosters would financially support and not just because these programs competed in the PAC...
The passion really never left the rivalry although many ASU administrators over the years didn't really get it the way most die hard fans got it...I can't wait for the day when the Sparky Caravan comes to Tucson and hundreds and maybe even thousands of Sun Devil fans will be in attendance and cheering on our Championship Sun Devils...
Championships or Bust...Go Devils!!!
