Originally today was supposed to be the last practice before the spring game but if you recall last Saturday's practice was postponed to essentially tomorrow. So, this is why we got to see a scrimmage on Tuesday and tomorrow is going to be a walk-through session that will be closed to the media.
In terms of star power in attendance today definitely was the highlight of spring with Sun Devil greats Jake Plummer who also addressed the team after practice as well as Todd Heap and Shaun McDonald. Former players Alani Latu and DeMarieya Nelson we're also in attendance.
Before I talk about who ran first and second group It was good to see players who've been in practice every day but haven't participated in team segments in quite a while such as RB Tevin White, WR Jake Smith and DB Jordan Clark Sea action today so it's probably a good chance we'll see all three also participating in the scrimmage portion of the spring game
First group:
Offensive line from left to right: Isaia Glass, Max Iheanachor, Leif Fautanu, Joey Ramos, Emmit Bohle
QB Trenton Bourguet
RB DeCarlos Brooks
TE Jalin Conyers
WR Elijhah Badger
WR Xavier Guillory
WR Melquan Stovall
Second Group:
Offensive line from left to right: Ralph Frias, Danny Valenzuela, Ben Bray, Austin Barry, Colby Garvin
QB Jaden Rashada (was second group only in team temp period)
RB Cam Skattebo
TE Bryce Pierre
WR Troy Omiere
WR Andre Johnson
WR Coben Bourguet
In team tempo segment Bourguet completed his first three passes, twice to Badger and once to Brooks. His last pass was an incompletion intended to Stovall.
In the subsequent segment Rashada, who as we have been mentioning for just a about a week now is getting more and more looks in team segments (and has surpassed Jacob Conover in that regard) completed passes to C. Bourguet and Pierre, but also had two incompletions one of them clearly evading a sack. Skattebo has one carry where he was stiffed after a minimal gain.
During the last week of spring, it’s only stands to reason that there would be a lot of mixing and matching to get more and more evaluation snaps in 11-on-11 segments. So later in practice we saw the first group offensive line with QB Drew Pyne and wide receivers C.Bourguet, Max Ware and walk-on WR Patrick Williams and if my memory serves me correct the first time, we saw him get second group snaps.
With Pyne at QB in this series he was 1-2 with a completion to Javen Jacobs. Most of this series was Skattebo running the ball and in most cases not enjoying ideal run blocking which limited his production. In fact, the “Main Event” featured a 3rd-and-sort situations being played again and again and it was rare for any running back to see much daylight for even a medium length run.
Next series Bourguet at QB and he was 7-8, lone incompletion was throwing just out of reach for Andre Johnson. He had one completion to Guillory who is a move that I’m sure we’ll see a lot of, catch the ball maybe a yard or two beyond the line of scrimmage but uses his explosiveness and speed to turn it up field for some sizable yads after catch. From a defensive standpoint this was a great series for nickel back RJ Regan who on two occasions quickly snuffed out short passes to Stovall and Guillory and closed hard for a tackle for loss on Stovall and a minimal gain for Guillory. From a ground game perspective Skattebo and Jacobs had some of their longer runs in this series.
In the last team segment, Bennet Meredith was on the field with the first group OL and the second team WR’s. Completed his only pass (Jacobs) in his first series. In his second and third series struggled with seven total incompletions, with some shots to the end zone just off the mark or part of a timely pass breakup. In his last team series though, Jacobs did score on a short yardage run, which followed some good size runs prior to that.
Pyne had a throw intercepted by Shamari Simmons, which was preceded by 2-3 completions. It really is a neck in neck competition between Pyne and Meredith for the backup QB spot, and at least in the team segment today neither perhaps distinguish themselves from the other. I still feel though that Meredith with his overall performance through spring should be the No. 2 quarterback at the end of spring.
In Bourguet’s last team segment today, he was 6-9. What was noteworthy was that his first competition was a long one to Jake Smith, who today saw full action in a while during spring. Jacobs was the beneficiary of two of those completions, and also had some nice runs too. On the other hands, Jacobs was stuffed twice short of the goal line by Caleb McCollough. Bourguet has a near interception that Jordan Clark absolutely had to secure. Stovall had a drooped pass, as did Andrew Johnson who a play later made a much tougher, contested catch. Some will say that those two plays define him in a nut shell. Troy Omiere is good for one highlight catch each practice and one of those for a first down reception from a Bourguet pass. This Bourguet series ended with a Skattebo short run TD.
In the 7-on-7 segment in the red zone Meredith was much sharper with two TD passes each to Stovall and Badger. Came close t finding Badger for another TD and completed a pass to Tevin White, another player that saw action in this segment after being a very limited participant for the last couple of weeks.
Rashada was the most accurate of all QB’s in this segment going 7-7, three of those passes connecting with Jake Smith one them by fluke going through the hands of C.Bourguet before landing in Smith’s hands.
Bourguet was 7-9, couple of completions to Tevin White, and was nearly intercepted by McCullough in the 7-on-7. Overall, nothing changed today in terms of Bourguet clearly establishing himself as QB1 of this team.
