Much like last night, this mainly newcomer session was pretty uneventful. Tons of special teams’ drills, at the least in the session that was open for the media. As I mentioned in my preview of that unit, it’s such a pleasure to see Shawn Slocum’s attention to detail during these segments. Nothing we saw in previous years in this department comes even close to what we have been seeing this year.

And you could see in some of those special teams blocking and tackling drills that players were absolutely unleashing on those tackling dummies and sleds. Kareem Orr (more on him later), Malik Lawal and Terrell Chatman really stood out with their explosiveness during these drills.

Todd Graham makes it sound like he has the best of both worlds with these newcomers. On the one hand he certainly has a very talented group that is also mentally performing at a high level in terms of the character, etc. On the other hand, he doesn’t really have to dip into this pool and burn a lot of redshirts as in years past. That’s something we’ll get a better idea about at the end of Camp T, but my early prediction for true freshmen that are most likely not redshirting:

OL Steve Miller

DB Kareem Orr

RB Nick Ralston

OL Zach Robertson

DL JoJo Wicker

TE (really athlete) Jay Jay Wilson

Here were the two-deep we saw in the media session:

First team offense: Bryce Perkins (QB), Jacom Brimhall (RB), Terrell Chatman (WR), Jalen Harvey (WR), Tyler Whiley (WR) Raymond Epps (TE), Zach Robertson (LT), Mason Walter (LG), Tyler McClure (C), Cade Cote (RG), and Steve Miller (RT).

First team defense: Renell Wren (DE), Corey Smith (Nose), JoJo Wicker (Tiger), Ismael Murphy-Richardson (Devil), Carlos Mendoza (WILL), Khaylan Thomas (SAM), Coltin Gerhart (SPUR), Kareem Orr (CB), Chaz Collins (No. 40 walk-on CB), DeAndre Scott (S), and Dasmond Tautalatasi (S).

Second team offense: Brady White (QB), Nick Ralston (RB), Tim White (WR), Jordan Green (WR), Walk-on no. 83 (TE), Tommy Hudson (TE), Steve Miller (LT), Devin Goodman (LG), Tyler McClure (C), Mason Walter (RG), and Zach Robertson (RT).

Second team defense: Tramel Topps (End), George Lea (Nose), Jalen Bates (Tiger), Malik Lawal (Devil), Luke Williams (WILL), Jason Franklin (SAM), Jamal Scott (SPUR), Kareem Orr (CB), Chaz Collins (CB), Jayme Otomewo (S), and DeAndre Scott (S).

Biggest difference from last night was Perkins being rewarded with first team reps, but unfortunately for him it was a rough session, as he wasn’t as accurate as he was last night. Had one lateral pass almost intercepted and taken to the house by Orr, and as we learned through Twitter after the media was asked to leave, Orr did have two picks later on probably one of them, if not both, on Perkins’ passes. On the other hand, Perkins did have a red zone TD on a fade route to walk-on WR that wore no. 83 (wasn’t Kody Kohl).

Orr has been one of those freshmen the last two nights that jumps out at you in terms of his physicality. Looks like a buffed up Osahon Irabor. He’s a very instinctive player who is quick and explosive in his own right for a defensive back. Suited to play boundary corner and while he won’t unseat Lloyd Carrington as the starter, I for one won’t be surprised if he backs him up in the season opener as long he continues to trend the way he has so far.

Jay Jay Wilson continued to wear the green Jersey, and with both Grant Martinez and Raymond Epps showing well yesterday and today, this could make Wilson’s quest for playing time at tight end harder. Then again, who knows where else on the field he ultimately lines up at.

Defensive lineman Corey Smith continues to get high praise from Todd Graham and let’s face it, the interior of the line could use his help. Smith seems fully recovered from his hip surgery and moving very well for a 6-6 290 lbs. player.

Renell Wrenn, another physical specimen who is one inch shorter than Smith and at the same weight has according to Graham really impressed in the weight room. With Wrenn it has always been a matter of playing too upright and needing to master his technique, but he looks to be on the right path at a defensive end role that needs some depth as well.

Former ASU kicker Mike Barth was at practice.

2017 two-way lineman Richard O’Dowd was at practice as well. Stands at 6-1 315 lbs. I don’t see a player page for him but here is his Hudl film http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2918783/richard-rogers
