A cooler day in Tempe welcomed today’s practice in shells as the reality of Jaden Rashada being named the starter had set in and it was back to business as usual. Today, Drew Pyne was back in shells but was very limited today. The team seems to be getting back to full strength with few exceptions, now one week away from the season opener at Mountain America Stadium.

After stretch lines, the field goal unit was sent out onto the field. Instead of them moving from different spots and kicking, the team simply got into their set. Only one field goal was attempted by Dario Longhetto, which was made after his rough day yesterday.

Looking at some offensive line individual drills before the team tempo period, the offensive line as mentioned before, is something to look out for as even today, the rotation has been very apparent. The linemen worked very low pushing a bag on the floor; so low they were falling and almost bear crawling. It is tough to see in drills who is the frontrunner, especially at left tackle, but again, something that might now solidify after the season opener.

Jaden Rashada led the first team out onto the field for the tempo period. Rashada flipped the script on yesterday’s start going 3-3, finding three different targets. One ball to Elijhah Badger, a ball to Jalin Conyers, and a ball to Gio Sanders. A DeCarlos Brooks run ended Rashada's segment before Trenton Bourguet came in. Bourguet had a little more of a difficult time. He found Korbin Hendrix before a ball was thrown behind Messiah Swinson and overthrowing Bryce Pierre.

The offense moved over to the other field, being put in a red zone situation, emphasizing more run to start. Brooks found some holes early, but the defense kept almost tackling in the name of physicality. This would be here and later with Kenny Dillingham not being happy as, again, the team was not in full pads.

In the same period, the ball was moved back for Bourguet to get to work. On his first play, the ball was thrown deep but picked off by the scout team defense. The ball was intended for Troy Omiere. Rashada came in, and what looked like the exact same play laced a ball to Omiere for a touchdown. A couple of quicker tosses and runs were in play, with those throws being the highlight.

In between team periods, the one and two quarterbacks worked with tight ends building the chemistry that is believed to be one of the staples of the offense. Conyers had a nice one-handed grab on air during this period.

Another team segment ensued with Rashada's first ball going incomplete. The next play, Rashada had a designed run which led to a huge gain. Rashada’s legs being a huge part of his game, similar to another freshman quarterback four years ago. A Cam Skattebo run, and an overthrown ball ended the period. Bourguet came in going 2-2 with a new favorite target Shawn Charles being found downfield.

A special teams period was in store as the team solidified the personnel. Melquan Stovall and Javen Jacobs continued to take punt returns while Badger and Dee Ford look were on the kickoff return duties.

Quarterbacks worked on pocket fluidity before again coming to a team segment back against the scout team. Here, the left side rotation was in full effect as tackles and guards were constantly subbing. Looking at highlights from the period, Rashada in the first drive found Stovall over the middle for a deeper gain. Bourguet's plays were conservative, with a screen-like play possibly going for a big play if it was “live”. Rashada on his last drive, found Conyers and Badger for great gains as the Conyers ball would have been a would-be touchdown.

There were some routes ran on air before some more red zone offense was in play against the scout. Rashada here found Badger for a touchdown on the bottom left pylon nearly connecting with Conyers at the back pylon with the ball being overthrown. A walkthrough period followed.

After the walk-through, a short period had a drive-in store for Rashada and Bourguet. Rashada throwing a great deep ball caught over a defender by Xavier Guillory. After that though, Rashada being nearly picked after some miscommunication. These small things surely needing to be worked out before next Thursday. Bourguet came in briefly being consistent but nothing to noteworthy.

7v7 had Rashada off to a rough start. Rashada went 1-4 throwing two interceptions over the middle to Shamari Simmons. It was a rough portion, but as coaches said yesterday, these are the mistakes that he needs to get out of his system before kickoff next week. Both balls looked to just be overthrown. Bourguet being quite opposite, went 4-4, ending with another nice completion to Charles. Quite the flip-flop day going into the team portion to end the day. Before the final team period, another red zone period saw Bourguet throw two touchdowns to Stovall.

Two team drives preceded two great throws by Rashada, and two deep balls to Omiere and Conyers. The tight spiral downfield sparking Rashada again. A lot of simple runs and quick passes that we’ve been accustomed to followed before Rashada got a crack at a two-minute drill. The offense being in a scenario down by one point. Rashada found Sanders over defenders before a timeout and two incompletions. A rollout left deep ball caught on a jump by Andre Johnson had everyone fired up. That play set up a Longhetto field goal that was good. Practice ending on quite the high note, but how the two-deep on the offensive line settles down one week away from the season opener is probably the biggest question on this side of the ball.
