Someone wrote yesterday that ASU was practicing outside due to cooler weather and I can personally confirm that while the Sun Devils were again outside it had nothing do with the weather being "cooler."
Green Jerseys: Anyways onto the football, five guys in green today, one that I didn't recognize, but I can only assume the other four were the same as yesterday: Grant Martinez, Dillon Faamatau, Tim White, Cam Smith.
Tim White Update: Tim White still had his cast on (big surprise, I know). Got a closer look at it today, it ran right up to his forearm and instead of ending like a club, it fit right around his hand. On a short toss during a drill White caught a pass with two hands, though given the distance of the pass, wouldn't read too much into it. White also participated in ball security drills.
First Station: The first station of the day was ball security and tackling. Wide receivers got prodded at with a big stick while doing jump cuts through cones, the running backs actually did a drill I normally associate with basketball, in which they circled the ball around their hips. Not exactly breaking stuff, but you can see why Arizona State was tied for fourth in the country in fumbles lost, not too many teams start the day with ball security.
11 on 11 Tempo:
No situation today, Graham just let the guys play with a pretty significant edge for the offense, wherever the ball landed, the offense moved up to, even if the ball was incomplete. Graham yelled over the speakers for the "one-base" to get out there, which was the defensive formation.
First-team offense: Mike Bercovici (QB), Demario Richard (RB), Gump Hayes (WR), Kody Kohl (TE), Evan Goodman (LT), Christian Westerman (LG), Nick Kelly (C), Vi Teofilo (RG), and Billy McGehee (RT).
First-team defense: Villiami Latu (nose), Tashon Smallwood (Tiger), Christian Sam (WILL), Antonio Longino (DEVIL), Salamo Fiso (SAM), Laui Moeakiola (SPUR), Lloyd Carrington (CB), Kweishi Brown (CB), Jordan Simone (S)
Second Team guys who rotated in on the second drive
Offense: Manny Wilkins (QB), Ellis Jefferson (WR)
Defense: Renell Wren (DE), Emmanuel Dayries (DT), Edmond Boateng (Devil I think), Marcus Ball (Spur), Kareem Orr (CB), Ronald Lewis (CB), Chad Adams (S),
Didn't have the same vantage point as we get inside so I couldn't make out everyone, and I just put in the guys that I knew for sure were in there and just left the other spots open.
Demario Richard took a counter on the opening play of the drive, he ran right into his blockers on the right side, but managed to push the line two or three yards before the whistle blew, he wasn't going any farther, and they weren't tackling today.
Next play was a 10 yard completion to Gump on a crossing route that he turned up the field for about eight more yards. One thing that stands out with Gump, is that even when he catches the ball with his momentum going a different direction, he doesn't lose any speed turning up field. He could be absolutely deadly if he catches the ball with his momentum going forward and even a sliver of space.
I know it's just one small portion of practice, but every single day this week they've put Gump at wide receiver for the situational drive/tempo. Graham and Norvell have both talked about using a quicker passing attack this year and getting more speed on the field and using Gump in those up-tempo situations, could be a manifestation of that.
Next play Berco gave it to Richard on a zone read (which is apparently still going to be a part of the offense like it was last year when Berco played) for about five yards again to the right side of the offensive line.
Next play brought up fourth down (no first downs in this drill), Hayes got solid separation on a deep post going down the left side of the field and Berco sailed one right over his head.
Second drive was mostly uneventful with the second team defense relatively dominant. Last play of the drive Wilkins had Ellis Jefferson open, cutting to the middle of the field and put it way over his head and to the left. Graham said the defense should have picked it over the voice of god speakers.
Minutia: Happy Birthday to Laui Moeakiola and Christian Sam!
