While my videos are uploading wanted to give you a quick report about today’s practice.
As you know fist practice of Camp T actually took place in Payson. The tarp at camp did do a good job keep the field dry, but because of the heavy rains, if you took off the tarp there would be nowhere for the water to go but onto the field which would make it unplayable.
The team sure made the most of their Payson practice. Ran about three hours in pretty warm conditions and was a pretty physical session as well.
The running game really stood out today. Both Richard and Ballage ripped off long touchdown runs and in general had a strong day today with a lot of positive yardage snaps. Jason Lewis in his first day of pads had some flashes. Tough runner to bring down who doesn’t stop moving his feet and has tree trunks for legs. Still early to predict if he won’t redshirt, but for someone who just started practicing on Monday his performance was impressive and he made the most of the opportunities given to him.
With Westerman still out, it was encouraging to see the run blocking not suffer one bit as the backs had some sizable holes at times to run through. In short yardage situation we really get the see the value of a fullback such as Nick Ralston.
In the quest to find a Devil backer, JoJo Wicker has been the latest player to line up there. You really could call it more of defensive end role which gives the line the “40” they had from the Stanford game on last season and a scheme that obviously served this defense very well. I can’t say that Wicker stood out one way or another, but I suspect we see this front for the rest of the week and we can better evaluate it then. Wicker is plenty quick to play on the edge. The pass rush in general today was good. Tashon Smallwood stood out there.
The passing game was somewhat average but that is due to a very good day by the secondary with pass breakups and very tight coverage. Bryce Perkins got a lot of snaps for someone who is supposedly the fourth strong and he connected on a long touchdown (albeit blown coverage by Coltin Gerhart) to Eric Lauderdale. DeAndre Scott at Spur had another outstanding day in camp, but do did Marcus Ball who is now playing ahead of him in Moeakiola’s absence. Scott laid a booming hit on Manny Wilkins the goal line.
More to come later, but as always you are welcomed to ask any questions here.
