Arizona State football returned to the practice fields for the first time ahead of Saturday's matchup at Oregon State. Here are our observations from the media viewing period.

LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields -- Outside

ATTIRE: Shells

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: 30 minutes

GREEN NON-CONTACT JERSEYS: NONE

PERSONNEL NOTES
  • MUSCLE BEACH: Cam Phillips
  • Phillips was not spotted at practice, and true freshman Kejuan Markham was seen taking his place at the safety position
  • True freshman QB Jayden Daniels was a full participant in today's practice. By all accounts, it sounds like the plan is to get him back as the starter this week.
  • True freshman CB Jordan Clark was a full participant in practice, as he played with the second-team in 11-on-11's. He dressed for last week's game for the first time since week two, but did not see the field
  • True freshman S Willie Harts was spotted in uniform, but did not participate in 11-on-11's during the media viewing period. His status is unclear at the moment

**
The defense mixed around some players on first and second team, which will be reflected in the following depth chart. It's hard to think there's anything to really read into if all the starters are to be healthy for Saturday's game, but with the team on its longest losing streak since 2016, who knows**

FIRST TEAM DEFENSE

DL: (end) Roe Wilkins/Shannon Forman, (nose) D.J. Davidson, (end) George Lea

LB: Khaylan Kearse-Thomas (OLB), Merlin Robertson (MIKE), Darien Butler/Case Hatch (OLB)

CB: Chase Lucas, Jack Jones

TILLMAN: Evan Fields

S: Kejuan Markham, Kobe Williams

**With this formation, Kobe Williams serves as the nickel corner, but since the Tillman safety already partially fills that role he was pretty much playing as that second safety more so than true cornerback**

SECOND TEAM DEFENSE

DL: (end) Jermayne Lole/Michael Matus, (nose) T.J. Pesefea, (end) Shannon Forman/Stephon Wright

LB: Tyler Johnson (OLB), Case Hatch (MIKE), Kyle Soelle (OLB)

CB: Jordan Clark, Timarcus Davis

TILLMAN: Tyler Whiley

S: Aashari Crosswell, Alijah Gammage

OTHER NOTES:

-- Coach Herm Edwards was seen giving extensive pointers to starting cornerback Chase Lucas about his technique off the line of scrimmage. When fellow corner Jack Jones walked by, Edwards reeled him in to listen to and watch his demonstration too. He then wanted to make sure the two guys picked up what he said, and had them practice doing what he had just told and showed them.

-- During scrimmages, DE Stephon Wright had a nice play where he batted down a pass by fellow true freshman, QB Ethan Long, which was a welcome site given the unit's struggle to do this throughout the season.

-- Jack Luckhurst kicked a few field goals before warm-ups, here were the results:

39 yards- good
39 yards- no good
44 yards- no good

That's it from today's practice. Stay tuned for more coverage throughout the week and throughout the entirety of the Sun Devils’ practices. If you have any questions, as always, feel free to ask.
