It was Jack Loder (@JackLoder_) and Cole Topham (@HamAnalysis) who observed Tuesday's practice and wrote the following practice report.

Offense

The first day of Arizona State’s open quarterback competition looked a lot like any other practice, at least procedurally. Emory Jones was the signal caller for the first team, while Trenton Bourguet ran the second team offense. There was, however, some crossover at the skill positions. WR Elijhah Badger took two snaps with Bourguet in addition to his normal first-team reps. WR Cam Johnson was on the field with both quarterbacks as well.

Bourguet was decidedly better today. He was on the money with three throws, completing passes to Messiah Swinson, Cam Johnson and Andre Johnson during his 11 on 11 snaps. He and Jones were tasked with an identical out route to Cam Johnson. Jones overthrew him, Bourguet put it right on his chest. In a collapsing pocket, Bourguet stepped up away from the rush and fired from an awkward angle to hit Messiah Swinson in stride on a crossing route. Jones made a solid throw on a similar play but Swinson couldn’t haul it in.

The coaching staff purposefully called the same set of routes on each quarterback’s passing plays. Bourguet completed all of his while Jones overthrew two. If Aguano’s promise of open competition is real, Bourguet would be the starter based on today’s practice only.

Additionally, Ray Anderson was in attendance at practice amid social media speculation about his job status.

First team offense:
QB Emory Jones
RB Daniyel Ngata
TE Messiah Swinson
WR Elijhah Badger
WR Giovanni Sanders
WR Bryan Thompson
Offensive line from left to right: Isaia Glass, Chris Martinez, Ben Scott, Des Holmes, Emmit Bohle

Second team offense:
QB Trenton Bourguet
RB Tevin White
FB Case Hatch
TE Jalin Conyers
WR Andre Johnson
WR Cam Johnson
Offensive line from left to right: Ralph Frias, Armon Bethea, Ben Bray, Thomas Leboucher, Kolbe Stuckwisch.

Shaun Aguano said during his Monday press conference that he would be “very very very” involved with the offense moving forward. He was noticeably more hands on during the team period. He barked orders at the offense pre snap and seemed to be calling plays on the majority of the reps.

Attendance

Left guard Ladarius Henderson continued to miss practice with a finger injury. The injury was suffered during the Washington game and has sidelined the veteran lineman since. His status for Saturday’s game at Colorado is unknown but doubtful given his absence from practice. Running back Xazavian Valladay was present at practice and participating in drills but didn’t take any snaps during 11 on 11. He wasn’t taking 11 on 11 snaps last week and took on a normal work load at Stanford. Wide receiver Zeek Freeman was sidelined again as he continues to recover from turf toe.

The offensive line continued to work with new sets, as Des Holmes and Emmit Bohle patrolled the right side of the formation. With Ladarius Henderson out, it looks like the current formation of Glass and Bohle at tackle and Holmes and Martinez at guard will stick. The group had an okay performance at Stanford, but was inconsistent when protection was most important.

Elijhah Badger followed up his career day by making a couple of nice grabs during wide receiver drills. Jones found him in the end zone and he made a leaping grab near the back pylon.

Valladay was a participant in drills but was limited. Ngata took the lion’s share of tailback reps while Valladay worked on the side. Tevin White seems to have assumed the third running back role as he took the bulk of second team snaps during 11 on 11.
