Tuesday’s practice was moved to Mountain America Stadium (the team will practice there tomorrow, too), and much like yesterday’s session was longer than usual, and that by design, according to head coach Kenny Dillingham. Working on just one field might prepare the players for the same setting at Camp Tontozona, where ASU will practice Thursday through Saturday.

The team got ready this morning in the stadium as the new Mountain America signage was being put up over where it used to read Arizona State University above the south endzone. The energy looked to be better, and the team being in full pads would add to the physicality.

After the team stretch, the punt period started with starting punter Josh Carlson, who was named today to the Ray Guy Arad Watch List, booting balls up toward the south end of the field. In terms of the first group in the punt group goes as follows: Andre Johnson, Prince Dorbah, Jordan Clark, Will Shafer, Chris Edmonds, Ro Torrence, Bram Walden, Michael Matus, Sam Benjamin, Slater Zellers long snapping and Carlson kicking. The group went against a makeshift return but ultimately just flew to the ball.

Skill players, after the punt period, went into the ball security period. Viewing for media was a little tougher to begin the practice as the offense was also on the far side of the field. The skills ran with each other punching the ball and trying to strip each other.

The skills also following the routine as that same blocking drill after a reception that they have practiced. Today, the drill looked more even in the sense of physicality and lack of sloppiness.

The team got into their third period, which has been seen to be the tempo period. Parameters today being four minutes on the clock with two timeouts and the score being defense-20, and the offense having 14 points. A touchdown and assumed extra point to win the game. A little pressure for the offense. Situational football being something defense has dominated over the last couple of practices.

The 1’s came in with Pyne taking the lead today. Flipping from yesterday as Bourguet started. RB Cam Skattebo got the rock first, having two short runs setting up a third down. On the third down, a completion to TE Jalin Conyers kept the drive going as play callers called a timeout. They then rotated in Kyson Brown had two carries, with one ending up getting tackled immediately. Another third-down situation had a ball tossed to Badger, but it was dropped. Period over, frustration looking like yesterday.

As the rotation returned to individual drills, receivers returned to securing catches as they tuned upfield. They attacked balls going right at them, making sure they secured catches. Another theme in camp so far with no fumbles by the receivers.

Linemen continued working on their blocking schemes. This being crucial as the front five has rotated quite a bit over the last couple of days (as you can see in the two-deep). Therefore, the chemistry needed to be adjusted, especially in the team periods. Nonetheless, the unit grouped up to work on blocks and seemed to work as things looked up in the team period later.

Before team segments took over practice, running backs and linebackers worked in a group setting as they do on some days. After working over bags and footwork, the backs worked on pass protection against backers. The linebackers brought physicality, but RB George Hart III had some good reps protecting.

Back to team period for the second time today. The 1’s came out with Pyne to start. Pyne only got four plays to work as a Skattebo run, and a completion to WR Elijhah Badger on an arguable sack got it started. RB Kyson Brown had another gain on the ground, and a nice completion to TE Messiah Swinson ended Pyne’s reps in this period.

Bourguet came in with the 2’s, also only had four plays and did not get far. A throwaway and Hart run that did not get anywhere started the drive. RB Javen Jacobs had a nice gain and another run followed before Bourguet’s time ended.

More players came in with Rashada, but an incompletion and an overthrown ball did not give him much time to work as the team went into a break.

Between team segments, quarterbacks worked with Dillingham and offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin on drop footwork and ball placement in the red zone. It was very informative for the quarterbacks as the focus was on Bourguet and Pyne. The coaching did seem to make a difference as corrections soon turned to “good job."

Walkthroughs set up what would be arguably the best day for the offense since camp started. Pyne got the nod with the first team as WR Melquan Stovall caught a ball for a great gain. Skattebo had a short run, Pyne scrambled, and an incomplete ball set up fourth down. A punt ensued, with Jacobs fair catch signaling with the ball landing in front of him.

Bourguet came in with the 2’s and had a long drive. A short run and a ball to WR Jake Smith preceded a ball thrown away. Bourguet would then find Hart for a couple of yards. Back-to-back completions to WR Andre Johnson kept the drive going as the ladder being another first down. Bourguet would follow, going 1-4 with a Brown run mixed in. The drive stalled, setting up a Dario Longhetto field goal. A false start pushed it back, but Longhetto nailed the kick.

Pyne took the field again, and the response was just what he needed. First, a ball to Skattebo to set up second down. A quick completion to Guillory had Guillory in the open field, taking it into the red zone. A Skattebo run ended in the endzone. Back-to-back scored for the offense.

Rashada took over for two drives with a second, then third teamers giving him a shot to make something happen. Rashada had about 3-4 completions but some tackles for loss and an overthrown ball never got the confidence up. Rashada’s time was capped by an interception by DB Lenox Lawson.

Bourguet and Pyne’s next drives both ended in touchdowns. Bourguet’s drive ended in a nice ball to Badger, who was tackled into the endzone. Pyne had three completions setting up a Hart touchdown run.

The wheels slowed down a bit as a Bourguet drive had a lateral pass be downed on their own one. The drive ended in a punt. Rashada got another chance but did not find success with his time being ended by a false start.

To end the practice, Pyne got another drive which included completions to Badger and WR Troy Omeire. The next play for a first down looked to be a completion to almost everyone watching. Maybe not the defense. The call was overturned to an incompletion, with a lot of the offensive players vocalizing their frustration with the overturned call by referees. After complaining, Dillingham ended practice and let the guys know that complaining won’t get the team anywhere. All in all, a good day, capped off with a sour ending.
