Tuesday’s practice had the Sun Devils back at practice for the first time since the loss on the road at Washington. The weather was cooler this morning as the players were in full pads ready to start the preparation for Washington State. After the morning stretches, placekicker Dario Longhetto looked to bounce back this practice after having one kick blocked and missing another in Seattle. Speaking of kicks blocked, freshman defensive lineman C.J. Fite was blocking today for some interior strength and was praised after practice by head coach Kenny Dillingham. Today Longhetto was 3-3 from around 35 yards and was two for three from around 40 yards. The lone miss on the day being wide right, similar to last Saturday's miss that went off the right upright.
While the team got into some shorter ball security segment, the offensive line got their day started. Former defensive lineman Sam Benjamin wearing no. 66 as he continues to work with the offensive line. Assistant coach Saga Tuitele was very vocal this morning, urging his players to keep their heads up on dive blocks and staying square. An important note with the offensive line was offensive lineman Aaron Frost being a full participant after missing multiple weeks, lining up at first-team right guard.
The team tempo period followed, which like last week was against the starting defense. Quarterback Trenton Bourguet led the first team out for the first time. The beginning of the period saw the offense struggle heavily. Bourguet and company could not get anything going as the defense was flying, the front four especially. Bourguet found tight end Bryce Pierre for a nice completion, but the defense put the clamps on. This pattern also went for the second team led by quarterback Jacob Conover who had a nice scramble, but the defense clearly set the tone as the offense struggled.
After the tempo portion for the offense, the team transitioned into practicing against the scout team defense. Here, the theme for the offense was a little more apparent for the day. This being the attention to the run game in different variations. On top of the run game, the theme over the last couple of weeks of quicker completions from Bourguet was still a very big focal point today.
After the short time as a team, the position groups broke into their respective drills. Tight ends, under the direction of assistant coach Jason Mohns continued the emphasis on the run game, practicing setting the edge on end around blocks. Tight ends also worked against the sled, practicing extension and driving.
On the other end of the field, the wide receivers ran deeper routes practicing over-the-shoulder and back-shoulder catches against scout team defensive backs. “We have to be technically sound”, said assistant coach Ra’Shaad Samples. Wide receivers Elijhah Badger and Troy Omeire drove the group forward in aggressiveness.
Running backs in the middle of the field ran their own routes against no defenders. There were two good sights here as running back George Hart III was participating in drills after missing multiple weeks with a lower leg injury. Freshman quarterback Jaden Rashada, though not dressed, threw balls to the backs during this time. Rashada getting involved any way he can.
During the wide receiver portion of routes against air (ROA’s), Omeire has really made it a point to get as many reps as possible. Receivers ran shorter routes today but still made an emphasis on the longer balls to catch, as that was a struggle last week.
Special teams ensued as today; walk-on Ian Hershey headed the punt focus for the morning. Hershey looked good on his punts today but had one kick that was somewhat shanked. Kickoff was after punt, where assistant coach Charlie Ragle went over the scheme for kickoff/kickoff return. Longhetto assumed his kickoff role here.
The offense went back to work against the scout team as the balance remained to stay very apparent. It would be a run here and a run there between running backs DeCarlos Brooks, Tevin White, and Kyson Brown before Bourguet would find someone like tight end Jalin Conyers in the seam. The offense did not abandon throwing and being efficient but there was a lot more balance.
In a change of events for usual practices, head coach Kenny Dillingham brought back the “Main Event” portion with the one one-on-ones happening right after. There were some scout players going at it, along with the receivers and defensive backs battling after the main event. The defensive backs were on point, but in the latter half, slot Melquan Stovall and Elijhah Badger did their thing to make a statement.
Through the one-on-ones and the later portion of receiver routes on air, it was very apparent that Dillingham’s urgency to the group on aggressiveness for big plays was being instilled. Ball placement and receiver placement were points of interest, with coach Samples telling receivers to use their body to their advantage in securing the ball.
A walkthrough period preceded seven on seven as Bourguet looked better here. The ball was spread around to multiple receivers. Wide receiver Shawn Charles had a nice catch over the middle in the process as the quick game looked to be working a little better.
The team ended in a team segment as there was minimal throwing and again a lot of emphasis running the football. ASU did have one of, if not their best running performance of the season last week, so there might be some traction in how much the team will run the ball this week against WSU.
