Wednesday’s practice was all about tempo and urgency, with the players dressed in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts. After the stretch lines were ran through, the team went into the punt period. As placekicking has been very consistent, punt was run through twice today. The first time, both walk-ons Ian Hershey and Race Mahlum took turns taking punts. Both of their first kicks were average with second kicks being boomers. Hershey at one point, did shank a kick but the consistency has looked better.

The offensive start to practice looked a little different today. After special teams, the offense got into some 7v7 against a scout team defense. The theme here was efficiency as quick throws were the name of the game for quarterback Trenton Bourguet. At some points, there was a bit of installation for the game plan.

The tempo period then followed, which truly encapsulated the urgency theme of today's practice. Running back Tevin White saw some playing time with the first team, which is something that has not been seen in recent weeks. Dillingham called plays from the sideline, still enforcing the quick moving mindset. The period today lasted about three times as long as the team went up and down the field with some slower portions.

Switching over to the defense as the team got into their individual drills, the defensive line emphasis today was getting off the line. As ASU needs to contain Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, getting off the line through gaps will be crucial. The defensive line has been a strong suit as getting off the ball will bey Key for BJ Green, Clayton Smith, and Prince Dorbah.

Defensive backs worked on various coverage schemes that we’ve seen in a lot of practices. With many dynamic playmakers, it is no question that ASU will want to keep a lot of the offense in front of them.

The collective defense worked a lot on substitutions today as there was a lot of teamwork. The coaches continuously reminded the players that turnovers were needed. Much like the offense, all of the defensive coaches were harping on the tempo. This went for players running off and on the field on top of the playstyle demanded.

Switching over to the offense, the tight ends were very busy today, led by Bryce Pierre. The tight ends went over with the quarterbacks as routes were run. Pierre led the charge but on the first throw, dropped the ball. Pierre would bounce back as things got into a rhythm, but Messiah Swinson also was catching a lot of balls as Swinson may look for a bigger pass-catching roll this week.

Tight ends also eventually got with assistant coach Jason Mohns to work on their blocking techniques. Pierre was coached along with Ryan Morgan on their blocking. Swinson is the best blocker out of the bunch but as the offensive line is banged up, the tight ends are trying to make sure their prepared in order to possibly set the edges.

While the tight ends were with quarterbacks, receivers like yesterday were making sure the physicality was being brought. It is obvious that the receivers aren’t the most fluid blockers, but assistant coach Ra’Shaad Samples is constantly getting on his receivers to attack defenders to hopefully create explosive plays Dillingham desires.

The receivers then moved over to the quarterbacks, where things have looked very fluid. Bourguet is an efficient passer but, in these portions, has shown the connection with receivers down the field. Wide receiver Kaleb Black keeps poking his head in the first reps while Elijhah Badger and Melquan Stovall really have taken the reigns leading by example. Black has seen a lot more reps as the young freshman looks to possibly see the field more. A quick note on Colorado transfer wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, he has continued to participate but is still far from seeing game action.

The team got into their second punt period of the day. Mahlum got a little more time than Hershey, as he is the true punter of the two. Stovall has maintained his role taking punts but has worked in combination with Javen Jacobs heavily this week.

In the 2v2 and 7v7 periods, it was safe to say the offense somewhat dominated at some points. Starting with the 2v2, all of the slots have been playing well in terms of getting open. That going for Stovall, Black, and Gio Sanders. Receiver Troy Omeire continues to show his back-pylon fade domination as well. Xavier Guillory had good conversation with coach Samples on attacking the football and somewhat being selfish in taking the ball from defenders.

In a defensive scope, Ed Woods has carried his momentum from the Cal game over to this week. Although he did have a late pass interference penalty, Woods has come into his own the last two weeks.

The following 7v7 period was not the flashiest time with quarterback Jacob Conover. Defensive back Macen Williams, who has the leave the Cal game due to injury, had nice coverage as the defense really picked up the pace in the red zone portion of this period. That said, Omeire and Swinson had two more catches leaving their mark on today's practice.

Both sides of the ball per usual ended on their own respective fields in team segments. They took time to slow it down as there were some sloppy mistakes earlier, and to end practice looked to be taking steps in the right direction through injuries.
