Arizona State football returned to the practice fields for the second time ahead of Saturday afternoon's matchup against Oregon State in Corvallis. Here are our observations from the media viewing period.

-- Obviously, you will probably notice that the defensive personnel looks a little wonky. Like why is Kobe Williams playing safety? Why is Aashari Crosswell with the second-teamers? Why are George Lea and Jermayne Lole not with the first-teamers? My guess is they are just trying different looks and different personnel combinations and seeing if anything fits. Three straight losses often leads to some maneuvering.
-- "Read the quarterback, it's two-coverage," coach Herm Edwards could be heard shouting at Tillman safety Evan Fields after the first play of 11-on-11.
-- “Remember what you’re playing, Chase, see who’s out there,” defensive backs coach Tony White was heard telling Lucas before a snap.
— After Kearse-Thomas barely missed breaking up a short pass to Hudson that resulted in a touchdown, sophomore LB & captain Darien Butler was fed up with his teammate. “You’re doing that **** every time they get down there, c’mon bro, you’re late to it every time!”

- We did not see S Cam Phillips at practice today. In his absence, freshman Kejuan Markham filled in at first-team safety alongside Kobe Williams. This is the second day in a row we haven't spotted Phillips at practice. He suffered a concussion in the USC game.
- Not that this is anything new, but seniors Roy Hemsley and Steve Miller are continuing to split reps about 50/50 at right tackle based on what we saw in walk-throughs and scrimmaging today
