Wednesday practice report

Today the Sun Devils practiced outside and have changed some dynamics around since last year. First off the music is much louder. Last year they used the speakers built into the light posts and today I counted 3 or 4 huge carts of speakers on the ground. If you stand within 10 feet of one, your body starts shaking a little.

Todd Graham also used these speakers to communicate across the whole field during the 11 on 11 portion of practice. There is also a much larger play clock that sits at the end of the field which is more visible.

Green jerseys: Grant Martinez, Dillon Faamatau, Tim White, Cam Smith

Tim White had a smaller version of his previous cast on this morning.

11 on 11:

Graham (who's voice now booms across the field thanks to these speakers) set up a situational drive. There were 52 seconds left in the game, offense and defense had one timeout a piece. The offense was down 2 points with the ball and needed to drive the length of the field to kick a game winning field goal.

First-team offense: Mike Bercovici (QB), Kalen Ballage (RB), D.J. Foster (WR), Devin Lucien (WR), Gump Hayes (WR), Kody Kohl (TE), Evan Goodman (LT), Christian Westerman (LG), Nick Kelly (C), Vi Teofilo (RG), and Billy McGehee (RT).

First-team defense: JoJo Wicker (DE), Demetrius Cherry (nose), Ami Latu (Tiger), Christian Sam (WILL), Antonio Longino (DEVIL), Salamo Fiso (SAM), James Johnson (SPUR), Lloyd Carrington (CB), Kweishi Brown (CB), Jordan Simone (S), and Armand Perry (S).

The offense succeeded, making it into field goal range on a completed Kody Kohl crossing route, followed by a check down pass to Kalen Ballage. A timeout was called with the ball on the 27-yard line and 15 seconds left. Graham called on the defense to get a TFL and Lloyd Carrington stepped up as he shed his block on a quick wide receiver screen to D.J. Foster which was completed but lost 5 yards because of Carrington's tackle.

John O'Brien then came on to attempt the field goal. He missed the first wide left but the defense was called offsides. His second attempt got blocked by a number of hands which included Jordan Simone and Corey Smith. Rushing off the edge on field goal block team were Lloyd Carrington and Kweishi Brown.

Graham was vocal on the sidelines throughout and didn't really think either side showed enough hustle and urgency that the situation called for.

I'll be around today for any questions
