Wednesday practice report

It was a brisk 99 degrees and overcast this morning as the Sun Devils practiced outside the bubble. Normal stretching with nothing out of the ordinary except the choice in music.

It's usually something rap or motivational but today it was just the feel good "Get Down On it" by Kool and the Gang, which personally I enjoyed.

Green jerseys: Usual muscle beach squad of Dillon Faamatau, Jalen Harvey and Cam Smith. Evan Goodman and Nick Kelly were still in green but went through a few drills with the offensive line. If I had a guess they seem more precautionary than anything else but neither player saw time in 11 on 11.
A.J. Latu was also in green this morning.

The running backs got their normal start in drills without Kalen Ballage there, of course out with mono as we all now know. Jason Lewis seemed especially energized and took some solid reps in ball security drills.

11 on 11:

Situational drive of 56 seconds left and no timeouts for either side.

First-team offense: Mike Bercovici (QB), Demario Richard (RB), Tim White (WR), Devin Lucien (WR), D.J. Foster (WR), Kody Kohl (TE), Sam Jones (LT), Christian Westerman (LG), Stephon McCray (C), Quinn Bailey (RG), and Billy McGehee (RT).

Notice how things are switching around on the lines. Sam Jones is getting Evan Goodman's reps at the tackle spot now and McCray took Kelly's snaps at center.Ellis Jefferson subbed in at wide receiver on the drive but I didn't see who subbed out.

First-team defense: Tashon Smallwood (Tiger), Ami Latu (Tiger), D.J. Calhoun (WILL), Antonio Longino (DEVIL), Ishmael Murphy-Richardson (DEVIL), Laiu Moeakiola (SPUR), Solomon Means (CB), Lloyd Carrington (CB), Kweishi Brown (CB), Jordan Simone (S), and Armand Perry (S)

Just from my eyes it looked like they had Smallwood and Latu lined up on the interior of the line and then brought down Longino and IMR to give the line more of an athletic 40-front look but Longino and IMR also stood up at points so I labeled them both at Devil.

Later in the drive, IMR shifted into what looked more like the WILL while Calhoun was subbed out so Salamo Fiso could come in and play his traditional SAM spot.

During the drive, the defense definitely won, forcing a 4th and 5 situation around midfield. The offense got flagged for penalties twice and Mike Norvell was not happy to say the least. Bercovici decided to go deep to Ellis Jefferson who had a solid step on Lloyd Carrington and was visibly open but the pass went off Jefferson's fingertips and fell to the ground.
