It was Jack Loder (@JackLoder_) on offense and Cole Topham (@HamAnalysis) who observed Arizona State's Wednesday practice.

Offense

Each practice, the brief viewing period of 11 on 11 ends with the losing side running sprints from sideline to sideline. It’s been the offense making the punitive jaunt more so than the defense, but Wednesday it was the defense getting torched and subsequently running sprints as their offensive counterparts looked on.

Attendance

A day after wearing green non-contact jerseys, quarterback Emory Jones and running back Xazavian Valladay were normally dressed for Wednesday’s practice. Although Valladay was participating in team drills, he did not take any snaps in 11 on 11. Left guard Ladarius Henderson was again absent from practice with a hand injury, as expected. Wide receiver Chad Johnson Jr. missed his second straight practice, no reason has been given for his absence. Wide receiver Zek Freeman was present but not in pads and not participating. He is dealing with turf toe.

11 on 11

First team offense:

QB Emory Jones
RB Daniyel Ngata
FB Case Hatch
TE Messiah Swinson
WR Elijhah Badger
WR Andre Johnson
WR Charles Hall IV
Offensive line from left to right: Isaia Glass, Chris Martinez, Ben Scott, Des Holmes, Emmit Bohle

Messiah Swinson made a slick move off the line of scrimmage to free himself initially, then when he was about five yards deep in the end zone he cut towards the goal post, losing Khoury Bethley in the process. Emory Jones was ready for the move, standing in and firing over the middle to hit him in stride. The connection between Jones and Swinson was strong to start the season but has tapered off since. Plays like this show that the tandem is still capable of hooking up for big-time gains and in big spots.

Jones fired again on his second snap, this time too high for a well-covered Charles Hall IV in the back of the end zone. The protection was mostly air-tight, but Jones threw off his back foot and tried to fit it into a tight window.

The highlight of the first team offense’s stellar day came from Elijhah Badger. He took a delayed handoff from Emory Jones on an end around and bolted around the right side of the formation. With an armada of defenders in hot pursuit to cut off his route to the sideline, Badger cut back inside on a dime and left the defenders in the dust. He scored without being touched.

Second team offense
QB Trenton Bourguet
RB George Hart/Tevin White
TE Jalin Conyers
WR Giovanni Sanders
WR Cam Johnson
WR Bryan Thompson
Offensive line left to right: Ralph Frias, Danny Valenzuela, Ben Bray, Thomas LeBoucher, Austin Barry.

Bourguet continued to lead a productive second-team offense during his reps on Wednesday. He found Cam Johnson on an out route that required him to go through multiple reads before zeroing in on the Vanderbilt transfer. He commanded the line of scrimmage and set a play that gave Tevin White a big gap to run through and nearly score from 10 yards out.

Bourguet also found Badger for a score near the pylon. The offense was incredibly excited to have the success that it did. They took their time watching the defense run its sprints following the session.

Merlin Robertson was frustrated with the defense’s performance and was observed shouting motivation at teammates in a very animated manner prior to the final snap of the day. The defense bottled up Hart on that snap for no gain.

During position drills, the offensive line did some extra work on each side of the line. With Des Holmes at right guard and Emmit Bohle at right tackle, line coach Mike Cavanaugh paid extra attention to that side. Holmes was observed giving Bohle some pointers in between reps.
